Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2018 in the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, SD. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake. Dorothea Jean Koenecke was born July 10, 1926 in Clear Lake, SD to John and Clara (Eakins) Thoelke. She was the oldest of four children and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1944. Dorothea was united in marriage to George Lewis Koenecke on March 22, 1947. They were blessed with three children. Dorothea was a hard worker and worked alongside her husband George at their family business, Koenecke’s Super Valu. George and Dorothea became residents of the Deuel County Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake on June 12, 2013 where George passed away July 12, 2013. Diane and Larry spent many hours with Dorothea in the final years of her life making her transition there much easier as she was a very independent person. Dorothea passed away there on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the age of 91. She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Hospital and Home Auxiliary. She loved the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron. She enjoyed Extension Club and was a member of the Slo Pokes for many years. She was an excellent cook and baker and hosted many family gatherings in her home. She enjoyed tending to her flower garden and was an immaculate housekeeper. She was the rock of our family and was a great wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Dorothea is survived by her three children: Diane (Larry) Kjenstad, Brandt, SD, Steven (Connie) Koenecke, Arvada, CO and Paul (Deedra) Koenecke, Sioux Falls, SD. Dorothea loved her seven grandchildren: Julie (David) Cook, Kris (Greg) Torline, Jeffrey Kjenstad, Corey Koenecke, Jason (Jessica) Kjenstad, Kelly Koenecke and Thatcher Koenecke; 12 great-grandchildren: Thomas Cook, Jani Berens, Dakota Koenecke, Nicholas Cook, Jacob Torline, Katelyn Torline, Sarah Cook, Ethan Kjenstad, Josi Kjenstad, Ella Kjenstad, Brady Carlton and Ava Koenecke; one sister, Barbara (Patrick ) Mullarkey and sisters-in-law, Gerry Koenecke and Sandra Thoelke. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara; husband George Koenecke, brother John Thoelke, sister Betty Schiefelbein, brother-in-law Melvin Koenecke, brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Louise Koenecke and brother-in-law.
