Pageler We have been called upon during the past week to pay tribute to the memory of another one of those dear pioneer settlers. Miss Dorthie K. Johnson was born in Lynzstor (Logstor, Northern Jutland?), Denmark, on February 3rd, 1865. When 11 years of age she came to America with her father and brother, landing in Connecticut; then they moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa; from there to West Point, Nebraska; and on January 1st, 1880 she came with her folks to Bazile Mills, Knox county, Nebraska where he father took up a homestead, being among some of the earliest settlers in those days when the nearest railroad was a Wisner, Nebraska. On September 18, 1880 she was united in marriage to John H. Pageler, then one of the early young settlers, and whose homestead joined that of her father's on the north. Here Mr. Pageler built his first home and here he took his young bride and the little pioneer cabin was "Home Sweet Home." Here they endured all the hardships and struggles of the early settlers and were always happy and contented working and enduring side by side and enjoying each other's companionship, changing the barren prairie homestead place until today the large tract of land known as the Pageler farms are beautiful with fine groves of trees, orchards, beautiful modern home and all the result of the untiring work of the early settler, so many of whom have been called home. Their marriage was blessed with ten children, 8 boys and 2 girls, two of whom preceded their mother to the great beyond, Peter who died at the age of 15 and one son in infancy. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, her home and family being the dearest place in the world to her and the devotion and influence of her sweet Christian life is shown in the splendid family who have been called upon to part with wife and mother, and a place is vacant in their home which never can be filled. She has been in failing health for years but always happy and cheerful, never complaining, her last illness came quite suddenly and after much suffering, on Sunday, July 18, 1923, at 11 o'clock a.m., surrounded by her husband and all her children she fell sweetly asleep. "Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, From which none ever wake to weep." Those of the immediate family left to mourn are her husband, 8 children, six boys and two girls, Henry, Mary, Louie at home; Mrs. Anna Beck who resides on the west side of the old homestead; John F. who resides 3 miles east of the old homestead; Willie and Paul of Gregory, S.D.; besides four grandchildren; three brothers, Martin and Peter Johnson of Gordon, Nebraska, and Paul Johnson of Lincoln, Nebraska, and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in Winnetoon Wednesday afternoon, July 18, 1923, conducted by Rev. Z. M. Bressler, Pastor of the M. E. Church and interment made in the family plot in the Bazile Mills cemetery. The pall bearers were all old neighbors: Jas. C. Jensen, A. C. Nelson, P. H. Scheer, Geo. Scheer, Fred Bessert. To the sorrowing husband, children and other relatives we assure them our heart-felt sympathy, and that we with them will ever cherish her memory. The Creighton News 19 July 1923
