Pageler, 84, who homesteaded in Knox count sixty two years ago, passed away on the same farm, Monday evening June 2, at 10:45. He had continuously resided on the place three miles north of Winnetoon since homesteading until his demise. Cause of his death was uremia and he had been ill about two weeks. He was 84 years, 4 months and 14 days of age. John H. Pageler was born January 18, 1857 at Holdenburg, Germany. He came to American in 1874, when seventeen years of age, arriving at Fremont the 22nd day of April that year. In 1879 he came to Knox county and took up 320 acres of land three miles north of Winnetoon. On the 18th day of September 1880, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Christine Johnson and to this union ten children were born, seven of whom are living, six sons and one daughter, all of whom were at his bedside, when the end came. They are: William, August, John Jr., Louis, Henry and Mary of Winnetoon and Paul of Gregory, S.D. Mrs. Pageler passed away in 1923. Mr. Pageler had faith in the land he filed on and through the years of pioneering and depression never lost faith. His sole possessions on arriving in Knox county were a yoke of oxen and a mustang pony, but being a good farmer, he was able to build up a well improved farm and believed that if you took care of the land, the land would take care of you. He early advocated the planting of trees in Nebraska both for wood and shade. Mr. Pageler erected a memorial gateway to his farm. It consists of two large red brick pillars. One pillar contains a marble slab containing data of his wife and himself. Mr. Pageler was honored and respected by his every acquaintance. Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the home three miles north of Winnetoon and at 1:30 at the Methodist church in Creighton, being conducted by Rev. J.B. Roe, pastor. Interment will be made in the Cedar Hill cemetery. In later years through untiring effort, Mr. Pageler had done much for the beautification and preservation of Cedar Hill cemetery. ...The Creighton News 5 June 1941 -------------------------
