A daughter of John and Margaret (Schmitz) Schenkelberg, she was born on Sept. 19, 1916, in Halbur. She attended Halbur Grade School and St. Angela Academy in Carroll. After graduation, she began working for Schenkelberg's Store, her father's general store in Halbur. On Nov. 15, 1938, she married Vincent Koenig at St. Augustine Church in Halbur. The couple made their home in Carroll. With Jim Hoelcher, Dorothy and Vince owned and operated Main Ice Cream, a favorite downtown eatery, from the early '50s to 1971. She was a member of the Carroll community, served as director of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, was president of the Holy Spirit Ladies Guild and worked as a volunteer for the Friends of the Library. She enjoyed playing bridge in the Bridgettes Bridge Club, getting involved in Democratic politics, and in her younger years, she enjoyed playing golf and tennis. In August 2008, the Koenigs moved to Omaha, Neb., for health reasons and to be closer to family. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Vincent Koenig of Omaha, Neb.; three daughters: Karen Siegler and her husband, Richard, of Davis, Calif., Vicki Koenig and her husband, Ken Monk, of Oakland, Calif., and Jaynee Cavanaugh and her husband, Joe. of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and four sisters: Kathryn Schenkelberg of Omaha, Neb., Margaret Burke of Des Moines, Lucille Koenig of Cedar Rapids and Mary Jane Goeche of Omaha, Neb. Mrs. Koenig was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Carl Schenkelberg, Richard Schenkelberg and John Schenkelberg; two sisters, Lois Schenkelberg in infancy and Bonnie Westendorf; and beloved family friend, Marge Perry.
