Read More	Feb 19, 2009 - Carroll Daily Times - Mass of the Christian burial for Vincent John Koenig of Omaha, Neb., and formerly of Carroll will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. Mr. Koenig, 94, died Monday, Feb. 16, at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The Rev. Timothy Johnson will preside at the Mass. Lectors will be Amy Stout, Mark Siegler and Christopher Cavanaugh. Gift bearers will be Karen Siegler, Vicki Koenig and Jaynee Cavanaugh. Eucharistic ministers will be Judy Feld and Florence Oswald. Organist will be Barb McDermott. Casket bearers will be Mark Siegler, Matthew Siegler, Christopher Cavanaugh, Jonathan Cavanaugh, Michael Cavanaugh and Jeff Cavanaugh. Honorary casket bearers will be Richard Siegler, Ken Monk, Joe Cavanaugh, Neil Ludwig, Terry Fritz and Maury Heinrichs. American Legion Post No. 7 of Carroll will give military honors. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Ohde Twit Funeral Home in Carroll. Visitation will resume at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. The family suggests memorial contributions to Holy Spirit Parish or New Hope Village in lieu of flowers. A son of Joseph and Frances (Roth) Koenig, he was born Dec. 27, 1914, at Halbur, attended St. Augustine Grade School there and in 1934 graduated from Carroll High School, where he'd excelled as an athlete. Mr. Koenig worked for Pepsi-Cola Bottling in Carroll. He and Dorothy Ann Schenkelberg were married Nov. 15, 1938, at Halbur. Mr. Koenig was drafted into the Navy in 1943 and served during World War II. He owned and operated Main Ice Cream in downtown Carroll from the late 1950s to 1971. He was later a representative for Blue Cross/Blue Shield until retiring in 1982. He had a lifelong passion for baseball. With his six brothers he played baseball for the Halbur Merchants and continued to play semi-professional baseball for about 15 years. He then coached American Legion baseball for several years. He also collected coins and helped others evaluate their collections, and he enjoyed playing pinochle, fishing and volunteering at his church and at Community of Concern. Mr. Koenig moved to Omaha in 2008 to be closer to relatives. Survivors include three daughters and their husbands: Karen and Richard Siegler of Davis, Calif., Vicki Koenig and Ken Monk of Oakland, Calif., and Jaynee and Joe Cavanaugh of Omaha; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two brothers: Herb Koenig of Omaha and Joe Koenig and wife Lucille of Cedar Rapids. Mr. Koenig was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, in January; six brothers: Leo, Eugene, Simon and Father Jerome Koenig and two in infancy; and two sisters: Nora Heinrichs and Florine Koenig.
