Born in Gaffney, S.C. she was the wife of Clyde Scates, Jr. and daughter of the late Levie Hampton and Sarah Lee Wilson Hampton. She retired from the cafeteria at Alma & B.D. Lee Elementary Schools and was a member of Beech Street Presbyterian Church. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, loved everyone, and never met a stranger. Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Vicki Scates Darr and husband, Dean, of Blacksburg and Marilyn Scates Owens and husband, Doug, of Gaffney; three grandchildren, Jason Owens and wife, Ginger, Summer Ham and husband, Jamie, and Jennie Owens; five great-grandchildren, Jay Tyler Owens, Jaycee Owens, Jake Ham, Jessica Ham and Jase Ham. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Whitey Hampton, and three sisters, Mary Wyatt, Shirley Putnam, and Brenda Hampton. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2 p.m. in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry McKee and Mr. Jason Owens officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Senior Centers of Cherokee Co., 499 West Rutledge Avenue, Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
