Description	:	A Villisca woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a one car accident Saturday morning north of Clarinda, but her death may not be counted as a traffic fatality. Sheriff Dick Hunt said this Monday that Mrs Dorothy Kerns of rural Villisca, may have been dead before the accident. Hunt said county coroner Dr E.E. Sheriff Dick Hunt said this Monday that Mrs Dorothy Kerns of rural Villisca, may have been dead before the accident. Hunt said county coroner Dr E.E. Zehr and a pathologist would be going an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. "The nature of the injuries, and lack of bleeding leads us to believe she may have died before the accident occurred," said Hunt. Hunt said the results of the autopsy should be known within a week. Mrs Kerns, 65, was southbound on M-70 (Wall Street) Saturday morning when her car veered off the east side of the road, paralleled a bridge and jumped a creek imbedding the car in the bank of the creek. Deputy Lanny Adkins said witnesses told him the car "just veered off the road, it didn't swerve." Mrs Kerns was pronounced dead at the scene by Zehr after being pulled from the car by Clarinda rescue unit personnel. If the death is ruled a traffic fatality, it would be the second fatality accident in Page County this year. Funeral services for Mrs Kerns will be conducted at the Clarinda Memorial Chapel, at 2 pm Tuesday. Rev John Clark will officiate and burial will be in the North Page Cemetery near Hepburn. Casketbearers will be Stanley Brownlee, Dean Schantz, Lisle Renander, Junior Renander, Carroll Nelson, and Gale Fisher. Honorary bearers will be LaVon Schantz, Glenn Brownlee, Donald Fisher, Warren Renander, and Lowell Schantz. Mr and Mrs Robert Brannan and Mr and Mrs William Baker will be in charge of the flowers, and Mrs Mildred Bean will be in charge of the memory register. Mrs William Kramer will be in charge of the music. Mrs Kerns passed away Saturday morning near Clarinda. She was born Oct 22, 1913 at Hepburn, the daughter of Oscar and Dosia Edmonds Schantz. On Aug 24, 1930, Dorothy was united in marriage to Wayne R. Kerns, at the Methodist Church Parsonage. In 1946 they moved to Moline, Illinois and returned in 1976 to farm in North Page County. Wayne passed away on Nov 3, 1977. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Clarinda, and a member of the Eastern Star. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Mrs Phyllis Jean Peterson of Galesburg, Ill, and Mrs Bill (Kathy) Penrod of Orion, Ill, four grandchildren, her mother Dosia Schantz of rural Villisca, and her sister Mrs Bruce (Nola) Otte, of Clarinda.
