Read More	Obituary -- The Jamestown Press, Oct 8,2009: Dorothy Eaton (Turner) Clarke, 79, of Jamestown, died at Village House in Newport after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Riverside, she was the second daughter of Walter R. Turner and Marjorie Boss Turner, and the much beloved wife of the late Fred C. Clarke, Jr., who passed away in April. Dot had a love for learning that carried on throughout her life. She began school in Riverside at age 4 and over the course of her grammar school years, she skipped a grade, ultimately graduating from East Providence High School at just 16 years of age. She attended Rhode Island State College, now URI, and was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. In 1950, she graduated from URI with a double B.S. in biology and zoology; throughout her schooling, she was an honors student. At URI, she met her future husband, Fred Clarke, and they married in July of 1950. She and Fred moved to Maine, where their daughter was born, and from Maine, they moved to Duxbury, Mass. In 1954, when Fred was invited to join his father's insurance business in Jamestown, they returned to R.I., where Dot and Fred's three sons were born at the old Lying-In Hospital in Providence. Dot eventually returned to college once her own children were in school, earning an M.S. in library sciences from Rhode Island College. She later became the head librarian at Jamestown Elementary School, and later, a second and third grade teacher. She retired in 1988. Besides her love of family and teaching, Dot had many interests to which she gave countless hours. She was active with the Friends of the Jamestown Library and Central Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a part of numerous church activities. She was also active in "Save the Bay," and Pax Conanicus, which worked toward a potential ban of nuclear weapons. A member of the Jamestown Garden Club, Dot spent many happy hours tending her vegetable and flower gardens. Travel was also a passion, and Dot visited nearly every state in the U.S, many provinces of Canada and parts of Mexico; she had the opportunity to travel to several European countries and to Egypt and the holy lands. Dorothy is survived by her children: Susan Murray of Ontario, Canada; Steven T. Clarke and his wife, Susan, of Rochester, Vt., Thomas E. Clarke and his wife, Sandra, of Johnston, R.I., and Mathew F. Clarke and his wife, Susanne, of Jamestown. She leaves her grandchildren: Levi Clarke and his wife Jessica, Krystle Clarke, William Clarke, Bethany Clarke and Alex Clarke; her step granddaughter, Melissa Greenberg, and son Colby; and her new greatgranddaughter, Campbell Clarke, who was born in September. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Gordon Johnson, and her loved nieces and nephews and their families: Kristen Brandfass, Kim Johnson, Robert Clarke, Jr., Meredith Craven, Eric Johnson, Marjorie Johnson and Caroline Christiansen.
