Obit: JAMESTOWN - Frederick Cottrell Clarke, 81, of Jamestown, RI, and beloved husband of Dorothy Eaton Turner Clarke died on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Village House in Newport, RI, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of Anna E. Clarke of Boston, MA, and Fred C. Clarke, Sr. of Jamestown, RI. Fred was born in Belmont, MA and moved to Jamestown in his youth, residing there most of his life. A graduate of Rogers High School in Newport, Fred entered the United States Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII. Following his military service, he attended the University of Rhode Island, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in business in 1950. Besides his wife Dorothy, he is survived by (or leaves his) brother, Robert, M. Clarke, of Myrtle Beach, SC, his children: Susan E. Murray of Ontario, Canada, Steven T. Clarke and his wife Susan of Rochester, Vermont, Thomas E. Clarke and his wife Sandra of Johnston, RI, Matthew F. Clarke and his wife Susanna of Jamestown, grandchildren, Levi, Krystle, William, Bethany, Alexander Clarke, and Melissa Greenberg and her son Colby Wroe. Spending his entire career in the insurance field, upon graduation he was a special agent for Providence Washington Insurance Company, briefly living in Massachusetts and Maine. He returned to Jamestown to join the family business, Meredith & Clarke Insurance and Real Estate, eventually being the 3rd generation owner and President until his retirement in 1989. He served the Town of Jamestown as Chairman of the School Committee and as a member of the charter review committee and the personnel board. He also served as past-president and State National Director of the Independent Insurance Agents of Rhode Island. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, The Masons, a past-president of Jamestown Rotary club, a Corporator to BankNewport, a member of the Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Conanicut and Jamestown Yacht Clubs. He was also a Trustee of Central Baptist Church and a hospice volunteer. He was an avid sailor participating in the Florida to Bermuda race. He was also an avid skier. A celebration of his life at an open memorial service will be held at the Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown, RI, at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Memorial Fund of the Central Baptist Church in Jamestown or hospice.
