She had been staying with her daughter Sherry Davidson in Joliet, Mont., since her illness. She was born Oct. 8, 1917, on the family farm, ten miles east of Edgar, the daughter of Robert and Dora (Campbell) Garst. She attended school in the early years at a rural school established in 1924 by her father and a neighbor (Homer Keebler). Wyo. — Dorothy Elizabeth Highsmith, 82, of Lovell, died Dec. 28, 1999, in Red Lodge, Mont. She had been staying with her daughter Sherry Davidson in Joliet, Mont., since her illness. She was born Oct. 8, 1917, on the family farm, ten miles east of Edgar, the daughter of Robert and Dora (Campbell) Garst. She attended school in the early years at a rural school established in 1924 by her father and a neighbor (Homer Keebler). She finished her schooling in Fromberg, graduating from Fromberg High in 1935. Dorothy married Joel Highsmith on Jan. 12, 1936, in Billings. She followed her husband from Montana, to California, Alaska, back to Edgar, Mont., and Shoshoni, Wyo., and finally Lovell. Her husband, Joe bought her the Shoshone Motel at an auction in 1967. She operated the motel until 1976, when they moved to Lovell. She operated the motel while raising three of the five children that were still at home and was proud of how well the motel did during that period that she operated it. In Lovell, she spent many hours with her flowers and her yard, and she took great pride in them. Survivors include four daughters; Sherry Davidson and husband David of Joliet: Roberta Keith and husband Darrel of Sequim. Wash.: Marie Borders of Gallup. N.M.: Dee Anna Leonhardt of Lakewood, Colo; one son Joel Thomas Highsmith Jr. and wife Kathy of Riverton: two sisters Marjorie Gibble of Edgar, Gladys Casperson of Grantsville. Utah: 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, her parents and one sister Fern Cook of California. Dorothy will be remembered by family and friends as a devoted and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She was loved dearly by them all. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel. Interment will be at the Rockvale Cemetery.
