Ashburn Funeral Home of Plainview is in charge of arrangements. Dorothy Elizabeth Goedeker was born on a farm three miles north of Winnetoon, referred to as the Kremeier place, on July 11, 1926. She was a daughter of Herman and Sophie (Ellerbruch) Goedeker. Dorothy was the fourth child and oldest girl in a family of six children. Her brothers included William (Bill), Delbert, Allen and Donnie whom are all deceased. She is survived by a younger sister, Irene. She attended school at District 14. After school she worked as a hired girl at different places and helped her mother. Then she took a job as a waitress (riding the train from Winnetoon to Plainview) at a café owned by John and Alta Logan for nearly two years. The Logan’s introduced Dorothy to a young man by the name of Herbert Zuhlke, who had just returned from the army. On March 31, 1946, they were married by the Rev. Larson at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Winnetoon. Herb’s sister, Edna, and Dorothy’s brother, Allen, stood up with them when they were united in marriage. They spent their entire married life of 68 years on three of the different farms Herbert had grown up on south of Brunswick. She was currently residing at the Golden Living Center in Neligh. Dorothy and her husband, Herb, were blessed with seven sons, Norman, Keith, Eugene, Dean, Alden, Jerry and David. Dorothy was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of rural Brunswick until it merged with another church and became Our Savior’s Lutheran of Plainview. She was well known for her ability to set a table for extras if they happened to show up at mealtimes and for her baking. She was a doer, a caretaker of family, a mother and grandmother who was always there when someone needed her. She helped take care of many grandchildren over the years, washed a whole lot of clothes and fixed an abundant amount of meals. You were always welcome at her and Herb’s table. Dorothy died on Dec. 22, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in Neligh at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 11 days. Survivors include all seven of her sons, Norman (Jane) and Eugene (Deborah) all of Brunswick, Keith (Debra) of Neligh, Dean (Gina) of Omaha, Alden (Lisa) of Plainview, Jerry (Rhonda) of Creighton and David of Crofton; 17 grandsons, six granddaughters and 33 great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene (Gene) Hague of Omaha and sister-in-law, Edna Raff of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, on July 23, 2014; parents, Herman and Sophie Goedeker; brothers and sisters-in-law, William (Faye) Goedeker, Delbert (Rose) Goedeker, Allen (Dorus) Goedeker and Donald Goedeker and brother-in-law, Lester Raff.
