Duane Christiansen served as a soloist, singing “Amazing Grace,” and Barbara Ross and Julie Johansen Couch sang a duet, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” Congregational hymns were “I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry,” and “Jesus Loves Me.” Organist was Jan Krause. Bearers were the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Military honors were provided by the Brunswick American Legion Post #357 and Creighton V.F.W. Post #1151. Herbert Carl Ferdinand Zuhlke was born on a farm seven miles south of Brunswick on March 24, 1918, to August and Bertha (Bono) Zuhlke and died, Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in Neligh at the age of 96. He has one sister, Edna Raff. Zuhlke lived on various farms south of Brunswick his entire life, except for his time spent in the service. He attended District 58 and 35 schools and after completing the 10th grade, he worked as a farm hand in various places. On July 14, 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army. He left for overseas duty on Aug. 17, 1942, and was stationed in Belfast, Ireland; near Newcastle, England; Oran, Africa and various areas in Italy. He did mechanic work and was a battalion welder. Zuhlke returned home on Oct. 10, 1945. Zuhlke then met Dorothy Goedeker, who would become his wife of more than 68 years. She was a waitress at a local café in Plainview. They were married on March 31, 1946, at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Winnetoon. The couple spent their entire married life on three of the different farms Zuhlke had resided on during his childhood years. They were blessed with seven sons, Norman, Keith, Eugene, Dean, Alden, Jerry and David. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of rural Brunswick until it merged with another church and became Our Savior’s Lutheran of Plainview. The couple was currently residing at the Golden Living Center of Neligh. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Bertha Zuhlke; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: William (Faye) Goedeker, Allen (Dorus) Goedeker, Delbert (Rose) Goedeker, Donnie Goedeker and Lester Raff. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Zuhlke; and all seven of his sons, Norman (Jane) Zuhlke of Brunswick, Keith (Debra) Zuhlke of Neligh, Eugene (Deborah) Zuhlke of Brunswick, Dean (Gina) Zuhlke of Omaha, Alden (Lisa) Zuhlke of Plainview, Jerry (Rhonda) Zuhlke of Creighton and David Zuhlke of Crofton; 17 grandsons; six granddaughters; 31 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Raff of Lincoln, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gene and Irene Hague of Omaha.
