Loved ones were with her. She was born in Louisa County, Iowa on June 4, 1910 to John Laurence and Elizabeth Fischer Colton. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, and two brothers. She was united in marriage to Herbert Ellingson on June 3, 1938 and celebrated 61 years of marriage with him prior to his death in April 2000. Dorothy graduated from Cotter, Iowa high school in 1929 and from the University of Iowa with a degree in secondary education in 1933. Her experience teaching in a one-room schoolhouse qualified her to teach elementary education in Cedar Rapids. She received certification in elementary education from Coe College in 1963. Dorothy and her husband retired in 1973 and wintered in McAllen, Texas until 1993. She was active in Olivet Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids and First Presbyterian Church in McAllen, belonging to Mizpah King's Daughters and Martha Mary Church Circle in Cedar Rapids. She was a past member of Cedar Rapids Women's Women's Club and the Organization of University Women. Dorothy was an avid reader, loved travel, and she and her husband were quiet supporters of community charities and political candidates. She is survived by her son; two daughters; 13 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services: 3 pm Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. The Reverend Karen Downey Beals will officiate. The family suggests that memorials given in their mother's name go to the Martha Mary Circle at Olivet Church.
