Description	:	Dorothy Keuten was born on Sept. 27, 1924 south of Grant, Neb. She was the sixth of nine children born to Christian and Anna (Schurr) Gengenbach. She was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church as a young girl. Dorothy attended a one room country school south of Grant for elementary and later graduated from Perkins County High School in 1941. She was the sixth of nine children born to Christian and Anna (Schurr) Gengenbach. She was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church as a young girl. Dorothy attended a one room country school south of Grant for elementary and later graduated from Perkins County High School in 1941. Dorothy attended Kearney State Teacher's College where she received her teaching certificate and taught country school south of Grant and near Venango, Neb. for several years. Dorothy was married to Marvin Keuten on May 26, 1946 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant. The marriage was blessed with five children. The family made their home on a farm northwest of Grant. Dorothy continued to maintain the farm after Marvin died unexpectedly in 1976. After his death, Dorothy was employed by Big Byron Agri-Services and later by Logsdon and Sons until her retirement at the age of 80. Dorothy moved to Westview Retirement in 2008 and this past August moved to Park Ridge Assisted Living. Dorothy had developed pulmonary fibrosis and had been transferred to the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte where she died on Saturday, Jan.18, 2014. She had reached the age of 89. Dorothy's life evolved around her family. She enjoyed supporting her children and grandchildren in all their endeavors. She took great pleasure in playing cards and eating ice cream with her brothers and sisters on Sunday afternoons. Dorothy enjoyed cooking, gardening, and flowers. In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Gengenbach and two sisters, Lillian Logsdon and Arlene Kurkowski. She is survived by three daughters, Deb Keuten of Hot Springs, S.D., Shari and husband Martin Ficken of Flatonia, Texas, and Pam and husband Don Payne of Sunnyvale, Texas; two sons, Brad and wife Joanne of Grant and John and wife Michelle of Lincoln, Neb.; 11 grandchildren, Nikki, Jeff and wife Angie, Garon, and Jory Keuten; Scott and Ron Petro, Casi and husband Jeovany Castellano, Martin and Joe Ficken, Devin and Brad DeLeon; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, George and wife Betty Gengenbach and Dan and wife Evelyn Gengenbach all of Grant; three sisters, Eleanor Russell, Rosie and husband Jack Barry, all of Grant and Anita and husband Don Most of Ogallala, Neb.; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Jan. 22, 2014 at the Grant Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Krause officiating. Burial was in the Grant Fairview Cemetery. Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
