Mom was born on September 2, 1916, in her family home in Haddam, Kansas, to Frank and Emma (Konop) Harris. At the age of 4, her family moved to Gregory, South Dakota, where her dad found work in farming. Read More	Dorothy Helen (Harris) Hespe of Belle Fourche, died Tuesday, August 31, just 2 days short of her 94th birthday. Mom was born on September 2, 1916, in her family home in Haddam, Kansas, to Frank and Emma (Konop) Harris. At the age of 4, her family moved to Gregory, South Dakota, where her dad found work in farming. She learned the Bohemian language from her mother's relatives in the area (including some colorful phrases she loved to teach to grandchildren and caregivers). In Gregory, she also met her future husband who farmed with her father. In 1932, her family and Dad moved to the Black Hills with hopes of the men finding work at the Homestake Mine; however, jobs at the sugar factory led the family to Belle Fourche. On June 14, 1934, Mom married Henry E. Hespe. Over 22 years, they had five children: Verlyn, Marion, Arley, Ross "Oz", and Cindy. While Mom prided herself as a homemaker, she also worked at the Safeway during the war. She and Dad briefly ran the Ridgeway Store in Montana in the late-40s. In the 1960s, she began to teach accordion and piano. Mom loved gardening, sewing, pets, friends, and a good joke from one of her kids. Mom played piano, organ, accordion, and guitar. Famous for her lemon meringue pie, fudge and divinity, she taught her children and grandchildren to cook. Mom's memory amazed everyone who knew her, sharing stories from her childhood as early as 1918. She prided herself for her hard work ethic and independence in recent years. With a great sense of humor, she plotted her plan of attack to negotiate ongoing independence issues with her physicians. A beautiful woman inside and out, she appeared and behaved decades younger than her calendar years. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, her husband Henry, son Verlyn, daughters-in-law Carol and Mary Lou, and brother Everett "Buck" Harris. Survivors include four children: Marion Hespe of St. Onge, Arley (Bob) Maynard of Sundance, Wyoming, Ross "Oz" (Sandi) Hespe of Belle Fourche, Cindy Hespe (Wayne Wiebe) of Eagle, Idaho. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 12 - 7 p.m. on Friday, September 3, at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche. Funeral Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, September 4, at the First Baptist Church in Belle Fourche with Pastor Anthony Bradseth officiating. Burial will follow at Pineslope Cemetery in Belle Fourche The family suggests memorials to the Hospice of the Northern Hills, the First Baptist Church of Belle Fourche, or the Western Hills Humane Society.
