She was the daughter of the late Hiram H. and May L. Thrift. Mrs., Burke was active in several scholastic groups during her high school days, among them the Debating Team, a member of the winning Spelling Team and President of the Rappahannock Valley Educational Association. During her teen years, she served as pianist for Wicomico Baptist Church. She graduated from High School in June of 1941. After the advent of World War II, she attended Smithdeal Massey Business and in 1942 accepted a job at Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, where she remained for 13 years. She was among a group of women to be promoted through the ranks, and was directly accountable to the U. S. Treasury Department. In November of 1954, Mrs. Burke met her husband, and they were married shortly thereafter. She joined Irvington Baptist Church where she served as organist and many years as Chairman of the Flower and the Memorial Committees, as well as two terms as Church Clerk. The couple settled in Irvington, Virginia and she was immediately employed by Northern Neck Mutual Fire Association of Va. When their son was born, she became a “stay at home Mom”. Two years later, at the request of the Insurance Co., she returned to work for the next ten years. At the end of this time, she and her husband purchased a local jewelry store and both devoted the major part of their time to expanding the business, Burke’s Jewelry, Inc. Shortly after the purchase of the jewelry store, the couple moved to Kilmarnock to be near their business. Mrs. Burke is survived by her beloved husband, Fred E. Burke, Sr.; her son Fred E. Burke, Jr and his wife, Karen; her precious granddaughter, Courtney; her grandson, Justin and his wife, Melissa; great grandson, Finley Rhodes Burke and a sister, Laura Headley. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Irvington Baptist Church, Irvington. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Irvington Baptist Church, P. O. Box 417, Irvington, VA 22480
