He was the son of the late Lewis and Helen Burke. Mr. Burke served in WWII, although he was too young to see combat. Upon his return from service, he attended school in Washington, D. C. and was subsequently employed by Safeway Stores, Inc. for 25 years. He rose through the system to the position of Meat Department Manager. At this time, he felt a change in career sounded exciting. He and his wife purchased a local jewelry store when the owners retired. They both went to school and took correspondence courses regarding the industry. For the next 30 years both directed their efforts and energy to expand business. Their son worked with his parents, studied and secured numerous certificates of qualifications. Upon his marriage, he and his wife took over the management of Burke’s Jewelry, Inc. and the parents retired. The Burke’s were active members of Irvington Baptist Church. Mr. Burke was a member from childhood and Mrs. Burke transferred her membership upon their marriage. Mr. Burke was a deacon at Irvington Baptist for many years, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Church Treasurer, Building and Grounds Committee Chairman. He was a 25 year member and President of Lancaster County Lions Club and a member of the Irvington Council. Mr. Burke is survived by his son, Fred E. Burke, Jr. and his wife, Karen; his granddaughter, Courtney; grandson Justin and his wife, Melissa; great grandson, Finley Rhodes and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy T. Burke. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p. m. Sunday, November 1, 2015 at Irvington Baptist Church. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Should one desire, donations may be made to Irvington Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 417, Irvington, VA 22480 or your favorite charity.
