Anderson, age 94, of Ponca, Nebraska formerly of Newcastle, Nebraska, passed away on Wednesday March 16, 2016 at the Elms Care Center in Ponca. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday March 21, 2016 at the UCC Congregational Church in Newcastle with Pastor Gary Kimm officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Visitation will begin at 5:00pm Sunday at the church with a prayer service held at 7:00pm. Mohr Funeral Home of Ponca is in charge of arrangements. Anderson, age 94, of Ponca, Nebraska formerly of Newcastle, Nebraska, passed away on Wednesday March 16, 2016 at the Elms Care Center in Ponca. Dorothy was born on October 7, 1921 near Newcastle, Nebraska the daughter of Walter and Emma (Beldin) Sorensen. She attended and graduated from Newcastle High School. Dorothy was very active playing softball and basketball on the Newcastle town team and she also participated in singing and dance competitions. She was united in marriage with Byren Anderson on May 9, 1942 in Sioux City, Iowa. Byren preceded her in death on December 5, 1974. Following their marriage, Dorothy worked at an aircraft factory during World War II in California while her husband was serving his country. When Byren was discharged from service, the couple returned to the Newcastle area, where they farmed as well as working together at the Newcastle Hatchery which the couple owned. She also was an active member of the UCC Congregational Church where she sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy was an active reader, who also enjoyed baking bread for her family members and looked forward to babysitting her grandchildren. Her life and memory will always be remembered by her survivors which include her daughter, Cris Calvert and her husband Tom of Newcastle; and her son, Norman C. Anderson and his wife June of Newcastle. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Joyce Sorensen of Everett, Washington; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Byren; a son Donald Anderson; a grandson, Brian Chase; two brothers; and one sister.
