She was born on May 20, 1918, in Ellensburg, WA. to George E. and Dora Stenger Plunkett. Dorothy grew up on the family farm located on No. 6 Road. Her basic education was obtained attending a one room school in that area. She later graduated from Ellensburg High School and went on to study music at Central Washington College of Education. After graduation in 1939, Dorothy accepted a teaching position. She taught music education in the Wapato School District for five years. It was during this time that her romance with a young man from Ellensburg, whom she first met at a Grange event, blossomed. On May 26, 1944, Dorothy and H. K. "Kenneth" McCullough were married in Walla Walla, Washington. She moved back home, to Ellensburg, and helped Kenneth with his farming. Ken and Dorothy first farmed on the Vantage Highway. They moved to another farm, next to a lane, which later took their last name and is known as McCullough Road. It was during this time in her life that she worked side by side with Ken on the farm, including driving tractor, and hauling crops. She recalled driving beet trucks to the Yakima Valley and wheat trucks to the Ellensburg Co-Op. When work was done, she would play in the family band whenever there was the opportunity. Dorothy would play the piano or organ, brother George, the drums, niece Shirley, the accordion and niece Sharon, the saxophone. With her strong passion for music leading her, she opened McCullough Music in 1958. Dorothy could play just about any musical instrument. She not only sold instruments and sheet music, but gave lessons to many students in the area. Her favorite instrument, among all of them to play, was the saxophone. After twenty years, Dorothy sold the music store in 1978, to semi-retire. She still enjoyed playing, as in the past, when the McCullough Orchestra provided music for programs, lodges and community dances. One of Dorothy's other passions was photography. She became the official photographer at family events. She would develop her own film, even transforming the black and white photos into color photos. She embraced the digital technology when it came into being and learned all she could about it. After Kenneth passed away, in 1998, Dorothy became a member of the Ellensburg Kiwanis Club. She very actively participated in its fund raising and social gatherings. Dorothy was also known to take a few pictures at its events. She, very competently, served as its Secretary for many years, until her recent illness. Dorothy had been a member of the Grange since 1937, as well as the Rebekah Lodge, Women of the Moose, Mothers Club, Martha Cousins Hospital Guild, and the Ellensburg Kiwanis Club. She had volunteered with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and at the hospital, served as its chairman of the Hospital Gift Shop Committee. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, sister Jean Sines, brother, George Plunkett and niece, Shirley Sines DeLozier. She is survived by niece, Sharon Sines Hokenson, nephew, Ronald Plunkett, great nephew, Martin Hokenson, sister-in-law, Lillian Plunkett, cousins in the Seattle-Tacoma area, as well as many McCullough nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her special friend and companion of later years, Chriss Peterson. A memorial and celebration of Dorothy's life will be at the Armory, located on the Kittitas County Fairgrounds, on Wednesday May 17, at 2:00 p.m. Daily Record, May 13-16, 2017
