Description	:	Dorothy Appel was born Dorothy Helen Stephenson near Castana, Iowa. She was fourth of eight children. She graduated from Dow City high school in 1937, worked at the Denison hospital in the kitchen and at an egg dehydration plant. She married Russell Mesenbrink Oct. 18, 1941 in Rockport, MO and moved to Clinton, Iowa where she worked at Curtis Woodworking Plant. She had two sons, Ronald and Robert, and another, Allen, who was stillborn. Dorothy and Russell moved to Zearing, Iowa, where they ran Russ' Standard Service for a short time, and then moved to the Graettinger and Ruthven area... She married Russell Mesenbrink Oct. 18, 1941 in Rockport, MO and moved to Clinton, Iowa where she worked at Curtis Woodworking Plant. Dorothy and Russell moved to Zearing, Iowa, where they ran Russ' Standard Service for a short time, and then moved to the Graettinger and Ruthven area in 1962. After Russell died in 1967, she remarried to Einer Appel on March 28, 1970. She was one of the first two women elected to the church council at Bethel Lutheran Church. Einer died in 1986 and she moved into Graettinger in 1987. She lived at the Ruthven Care Center from 2002 until 2008 when she passed away.
