Born September 5, 1922 near Big Mound, Iowa, the son of William Andrew and Grace Elizabeth (Smith) Hemmings. On February 14, 1944, he married Vera Myrtle Eden in Fort Madison, Iowa. (Gary) Uhland of Warsaw, Illinois; nine grandchildren, Matthew Weitzel and David Weitzel of Iowa City, Iowa, Philip Weitzel of Mundelein, Illinois and Sara Weitzel of New York City, New York, Brandi (Travis) Hemmings Smith and Ty (Lori) Ullman of Spokane, Washington, Joshua (Deb) of Ankeny, Iowa and Dr. Kelly (Aaron) Cowan of South Burlington, Vermont and Dr. Jason Weirather of Iowa City, Iowa; eleven great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Stevens of Rockford, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera, his parents, and two sisters, Kathryn Turner and Betty Tatum. Dorrence was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Madison. He was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High school and attended Iowa State University. Dorrence farmed near Donnellson, Iowa. He worked as a millwright and later as a maintenance engineer for First Miss. Dorrence was an amateur radio operator and volunteered for the MARS Army Radio Network for over 60 years. His call letters were W0IHC. He enjoyed computers, playing golf, photography, and spending time with his family. Friends may call and meet with family from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson with Pastor Lane Van officiating. Burial will be at the Sharon Cemetery in rural Farmington, Iowa. A memorial has been established for Lee County Hospice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.schmitzfuneralhomes.com . The Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson is assisting the family with the arrangements.
