Abner's first born son, Hiram Benton Channell (my great grandfather), retained both "LL"s. --------------------------- Abner Gould Channell was born January 30, 1827 in Morrow County, Ohio. He was the son of Hiram Dill Channell Sr (1791–1834) and Elizabeth Oliver (1797–1883). Abner married Mary Ann Sheffer on February 10, 1848 in Richland County, Ohio. In 1849, “Rev Channel was the first minister at Bucks Grove, Ks. He rode a horse or walked from his home south of America City.”(1) However, before the end of the year, the couple moved to Burnett, Dodge County, Wisconsin where their fist son, Hiram Benton Channell, was born on November 15, 1849. On the 1850 Census, Abner is a farmer in Burnett, Dodge County, Wisconsin. The family is still in Dodge County, Wisconsin in 1855 (Wisconsin Census). The family moved to Nemaha County, Kansas before November 23, 1857 when their son Norman Hezekiah Channell was born (in Kansas). "The night of July 10, 1883, a cyclone struck Soldier about 10 p.m., instantly laying waste the whole town east of Main street. Some sixteeen or eighteen buildings were destroyed and four lives lost." (2) Both Abner's mother, Elizabeth (Oliver) [Channel] Waters, and his sister-in-law, Hulda Sutton Channell (2nd wife of Joseph S. Channell), were killed by the storm. Died at his home in Havensville, Kansas, April 25, 1908, aged 81 years, 2 months and 25 days. He leaves an aged wife, three sons, twelve grandchildren and three great grand-children to mourn his death. He was married to Mary Ann Sheffer, February 10, 1848, to this union were born five children, Hiram B., Minerva A., Allen G., Norman H., and Arthur. Minerva and Allen died in 1858, Hiram B., of Alta Vista, Norman H., of Havensville, and Arthur of Westmoreland, still survive him … The family moved from Ohio to Dodge county Wisconsin, in 1849, and to Nemaha county, Kansas, in 1857. He was a practicing physician for many years. He joined the M. E. church as an itinerant minister in 1860. In 1885 he joined the United Brethren church at the New Eden appointment, North East Kansas Conference in which he spent the balance of his life. He preached as often as his health would permit. On the 10th of July 1883, he was living in Soldier, Kansas, when it was practically wipfed out by a cyclone in which he lost two buildings and a good stock of furniture. Channell was born in Morrow County, Ohio, and died April 25, 1908, aged 81 years, 2 months, and 25 days. He entered the ministry about the year 1860, and for many years with his devoted wife endured the hardships of an itinerant life in the West, and met all the privations of such a life without a murmur, until from failing health he was compelled to retire. His life was that of a modest, earnest preacher, always accepting the work assigned to him without complaint. About twenty years ago he joined the United Brethren Church, and served as a local preacher until his death. The writer knew him for forty eight years, and feels assured that he will have many stars in his crown. Channell was born in Morrow County Ohio, Jan 30, 1827 and departed this life April 25, 1908, aged 81 years, 2 months, and 25 days. On Feb. 10, 1848, he was united to Mary Ann Shaffer, and in that year moved to Dodge County, Wis., residing there until March 1857, when they moved to Nemaha County Kan.; after living there several years, they came to Pottawatomie county and there resided until his death. There were seven children added to this union, six boys and one girl. There are now living H. B. Channell, N. H. Channell, and Arthur Channell. About the year 1857 he entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal church and preached until failing health compelled him to retire. He then united with the United Brethren church and served as a local preacher until his death.
