Description	:	Alma Smith, 89 of Grinnell and formerly of Springfield, Mo., passed away Saturday, September 26, 2009 in St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services will begin at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2009 in the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon with Dr. Marvin Smith officiating. Visitation will begin after 12 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2009 with the family present from 6 to 8 Monday evening in the funeral home. Interment will be held in Union Mills Cemetery. Dr. Alma Estella Smith was born on February 8, 1920, near Halfa, Iowa, to Charles Andrew and Hazel (Lundy) Smith. The oldest of three children, Alma was soon joined by brothers, Louis and Herschel. Alma's father, Charles, died from a ruptured appendix when the children were young, and her mother eventually remarried Miles "Pete" Groves. Alma graduated from New Sharon High School in 1938. She then continued her education at Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri. Following graduation, she taught at New Sharon High School, before becoming a professor at the Business College at Kentucky State University, where she taught a variety of business classes and tutored the football team. Education was always a priority for Alma, as illustrated by the endowed scholarships she set up for incoming Kentucky State business school students, as well as those at Winona State University. In addition to assisting hundreds of young scholars, Alma found time to earn her doctorate. Following her tenure at Kentucky State, Alma returned to Springfield, where she continued teaching at her beloved Evangel College. Always a deeply religious person, Alma rejoined the Central Assembly of God Church upon her return to Springfield, and was quite active in the church's traveling choir. This group traversed to U.S., ministering to others through song. Alma's travels took her around the world, with trips ranging from the Holy Land to China. But perhaps her favorite trips were the ones she made back to Iowa to visit her mother and step-father, along with her brothers and nieces and nephews. Family was very important to Alma and kept in touch with her family regularly through long letters detailing her activities. Alma was active and alert for most of her live. Never one to stop learning, she purchased a personal computer and setup an e-mail account when she was in her early 80s. Finally, when her health was such that she needed added assistance, Alma returned to Grinnell, Iowa, in 2006 to be near her family. She was survived by her, sisters-in-law, Helen Smith and Jeanie Smith, and several nieces and nephews. Alma was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Louis and Herschel.
