E. Clift in 1870; she was born in Middletown, Vermont; their family consists of three children: Charles C., Albert B., and Judson W. Obituary from the Spirit Lake Beacon, 12/23/1910: Dr. A. A. Deering, a pioneer physician of Iowa and former postmaster, died at the Eleanor Moore hospital in Boone, following an operation. Dr. Deering also was a member of the Boone library and hospital boards. Boone County Democrat December 9, 1910 The city of Boone, and in fact all Boone County mourns the death of Dr. A.A. Deering which occurred at 3:30 o団lock Saturday afternoon at the Eleanor Moore Hospital, an institution to which he had given most substantial service since its establishment. Monday, Nob. 28th he went to the hospital to undergo an operation for an ailment, which itself did not appear serious, but which he taught best to have attended to. He apparently rallied nicely from the operation and owing to his naturally robust and healthy constitution no fears were at first entertained of his complete recovery. Later, however, complications set in that made his case serious. The physicians and attendants battled bravely for his life, but he gradually sank until death occurred as above stated. While the reports from his bedside during the last few days were discouraging, still his host of friends could not believe that he was to die and the news of his death came as a shock to the entire community. All the members of his family had been summoned from their homes in various cities and were at his bedside before his death. The city of Boone is again deprived by the hand of death of the services of a most useful and valuable citizen and all bow in grief with the sorrowing children and widow in their irreparable loss. Dr. Deering was born in Jackson, Maine, July 8, 1845. His father was a farmer and blacksmith and of the sturdy New England stock. While still a boy the family moved to Newport, Maine. He received a common school education and attended a preparatory academy at Brunswick, Maine then taught school for a time to secure funds for further education. Later he entered the medical department of Bowdoin College and graduated from that institution with the degree of M.D., in the same class with Dr. G. D. Rowe. Soon after graduation he came west and in 1868 settled at Moingona, then a thriving town, in the practice of his profession. Oct 2, 1870 he was married to Miss Martha Clift, a school teacher. In 1878 the family moved to Boone and he entered upon a career here which has closely identified him not only with the professional life of the city, but with its social and business development. In 1881 he was appointed post master of Boone by President Arthur and served the community most efficiently. In the 80痴 he was secretary of the State Medical Association and for twenty years held the office of secretary of the Central District Medical Association. He had served as a director of both the Eleanor Moore Hospital and the Ericson Library since their foundation and was ever a potent factor in the building up of these splendid institutions. He was closely allied with the Y.M.C.A. work in Boone and was for many years a director of that institution. He was one of the incorporators and a director of the Boone County Telephone Company and a director of the Boone Brick, Tile & Paving Company and gave freely of his time and energy to the building up of businesses. He has been resident physician for the C.&N.W. Ry. Company since the death of Dr. Alleman in 1888. He was one of the trio of pioneer physicians of Boone County who all came here about the same time. Dr. Noyes of Ogden is the dean of the county and Dr. Rowe of Boone. He was successful, both in a professional and a business way, and his long practice has made him known to practically all the residents of the county. He was of a sturdy character, rugged integrity, and though serious in the performance of duty he was of a genial disposition and companionable to all and made lasting friends of all with whom he came in contact. He is survived by his wife, four children, Charles C. Deering, manager of the New State Telephone Company of Omaha, Dr. Albert B. Deering, with whom he was associated in practice, Judson W. Deering, civil engineer for the Northwestern in Chicago, and Mrs. Percy McDowell of Ashland, Ohio, eight grand children and three brothers, Rufus Deering of Newport, Maine, N.W. Deering of Atlantic, Iowa and Hobart Deering of Missoula, Montana. Mr. Deering became a member of the Masonic order before coming west and remained a faithful worker in the order until his death. He was Master of the lodge at Moingona. He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Boone and an officer in the church, and was ever an active worker in its interest and in the cause of religion. The funeral services were held from the church at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Stado Munneke and attended by hosts of sorrowing friends. Many of banks and business houses of the city closed during the funeral hours as a mark of esteem. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, bespeaking the general esteem and sorrow of his friends. J.J. Snell, a lifelong friend of the deceased pronounced a eulogy over his bier, which was very beautiful and touching. The honorary pall bearers were Dr. G.D. Rowe, Dr. W.L. Pollock, C.S. Mason, S.L. Moore, James McMechan and A.J. Barkley. The active pall bearers were Geo. Ecksten, J.F. Herman, W.H. Canier, J.L. Stevens, J.H. Andrews and E.E. Chandler. The remains were laid to rest in East Linwood.
