F. Holmes Highland County's Oldest Living Practitioner Falls Victim to Pneumonia Highland County's oldest practicing physician, Dr. Benjamin F. Holmes, was removed from our midst last Friday morning by the heavy hand of death and in his passing, Hillsboro loses one of her most widely known and respected citizens. Dr. Holmes was a quiet, reserved man, deeply interested in the welfare of the community and the happiness of others, and many a family whose home has been blessed by his acts of kindness will deeply miss him. He was suddenly stricken with illness early last week, but even after being forced to take to his bed, he made a great effort to rise and respond to the call of one of his patients, but the effort was too great and the kindhearted doctor was forced to tell his friends that they must call someone else. He rapidly grew worse and it was felt that the end was near. Fortunately one son, Dr. Trumen Holmes of Bremerton, Washington, who had but recently visited his father, had not gone far on his return trip and was reached by telegraph, arriving here two days before his father died. The other son, Dr. Audry Julian Holmes, of Westminster, British Columbia, was also notified of his father's serious illness and started for Hillsboro at once but the end came before he arrived. His daughter, Mrs. Mary Wiggins, and her son, Lawson, lived with Dr. Holmes. Through the kindness of fate, Dr. Truman Holmes, who had not been home on a visit since he went to Washington twenty-one years ago, had but recently visited his father and sister for a week and his visit afforded Dr. Holmes the deepest pleasure. Dr. Audry Holmes, through unavoidable delayed, did not arrive in time for the funeral, which was held Monday at one-thirty at the Presbyterian Church of which Dr. Holmes had been a regular attendant for many years. Owing to the son's delay, the body lay in state at the church until he arrived Thursday after which it was interred in the Hillsboro Cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. F. Paist, a warm friend of Dr. Holmes, assisted by Rev. J. N. Eason, pastor of the Methodist Church of this city. Dr. B. F. Holmes was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Enos Holmes, and was born in New Petersburg, Aug. 20th, 1842. He was educated in the public schools and then studied medicine under the tutelage of his father, after which he attended Starling Ohio Medical College at Columbus, receiving his diploma in 1865. He was immediately appointed a surgeon in the Union Arm and served to the close of the Civil War. After a brief period spent in practice in Samantha, he located in Hillsboro where he remained until his death. He and his father located their offices some forty years ago in the same rooms which Dr. Holmes continued to occupy until his death. They were each successful physicians and probably no man in Hillsboro had a wider circle of friends and acquaintances than Dr. Holmes. Dr. Holmes was twice married, his first wife, Miss Henrietta Julian, leaving twin sons at her death, and the second wife, Miss Mary Cochran, leaving a daughter. The three children, above mentioned, are still living. Dr. Truman Huff Holmes is a highly successful physician and druggist in Bremerton, Washington, while Dr. Audry Julian Holmes is an equally successful dentist and business man in Westminster, British Columbia. The daughter, Mrs. Mary Wiggins and her son, Lawson, lived with Dr. Holmes. Dr. Holmes will be greatly missed by the little folks of Hillsboro, as he was very fond of children and his acts of kindness in this regard cannot be better illustrated than by his distribution of gifts last Christmas to the families where Christmas could not be observed on account of poverty. Dr. Holmes did this without ostentation, quietly slipping out with his baskets and making the little ones happy and gladdening many a heart which will now be saddened by his passing. He was 78 yrs. of age, and the direct cause of his death was pneumonia. Affidavit for Transfer and Record of Real Estate Inherited The State of Ohio, Highland County Heirs at Law: Benjamin F. Holmes to T. H. Holmes, A. J. Holmes and Mary H. Wiggins Paul Harsha being first duly sworn says that on the 21st day of January 1921, the said Benfamin F. Holmes died intestate, residing at Hillsboro, Ohio, leaving the persons herein designated, all his heirs at law and next of kin, with their age, address, relationship and portion inherited by them in the real estate hereinafter described: T. H. Homes, Adult, Breverton, Washington, Son, Portion Inherited 1/3 A. J. Holmes, Adult, New Westminster, B.C., Son, Portion Inherited 1/3 Mary H. Wiggins, Adult, Hillsboro, Ohio, Daughter, Portion Inherited 1/3 That on the 31st day of January 1921, Paul Harsha was duly appointed administrator of the estate by the Probate Court of Highland County, that personal property is sufficient to pay all debts of said estate. That said Benjamin F. Holmes, at the time of his decease was seized of the real estate described below as "Exhibit A" Sworn to before me and subscribed in my presence this 30th day of March, 1921 Robert B.
