Description	:	Borne Jan 13, 1821 in Tuscarawas Co.,Ohio, he was the fourth of a family of twelve children. He was from a family of Methodist ministers and physicians. Dr. Holmes passed his early life upon a farm and until he was 17yrs of age his education was obtained at the ordinary log schoolhouse. In 1840 he married Elizbeth Huff and had 3 children. She died in 1847 and then in 1849 he married second, Cynthian Hulitt. She died in 1852. Then in 1855 he married Anna Jones of which they had 5 children. He was from a family of Methodist ministers and physicians. Dr. Holmes passed his early life upon a farm and until he was 17yrs of age his education was obtained at the ordinary log schoolhouse. In 1840 he married Elizbeth Huff and had 3 children. She died in 1847 and then in 1849 he married second, Cynthian Hulitt. She died in 1852. Then in 1855 he married Anna Jones of which they had 5 children. He had early decided to adopt the medical profession and in 1837 began his reading at Leesburg. In 1843 after having completed a thorough course of medical study and received his deploma with the degree of M.D., he commenced the practice of his profession at New Petersburg. For 32 years he was in the possession of a large practice both as physician and surgeon. He stood in the highest rant of the medical profession. During the civil war he served by the appointment of Governor Tod as examining surgeon. His interest were also in poetry, philosophy and metaphysics. He was a member of the Methodist church, acted with the Democratic party and in 1875 was the nominee for state senator. He was also a anti-slavery man. He would have lived to extreme old age but for his untiring devotion to his profession and constant exposure to all kinds of weather. He was determined to die in the harness and thus he died. His last act was to prepare a prescription and suddenly without warning, the stroke fell. The great heart struggled for a moment and was still. He passed on Aug 11, 1883 at 62 yrs.
