Dr. Benjamin Perry Robertson, retired Baptist Minister, well known in Spartanburg, died at his home near Greensboro, N.C. Friday according to word received here. Dr. Robertson's first wife, the former Miss Mary Ida Osborne, was the sister of H.K. Osborne, Spartanburg Attorney. She died in 1909. Dr. Robertson was Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Gaffney for about 8 years and the present Church structure was built during his Pastorate. He preached in Spartanburg a number of times. Dr. Robertson, who was about 85 at the time of his death, served as Pastor of the First Baptist Church in New Orleans, the Second Baptist Church in Atlanta and several other large Churches. While in New Orleans he helped establish the Baptist Bible Institute, which later developed into the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was also instrumental in founding a religious teachers college in Washington, D.C., and served as it's President. Dr. Robertson was born and reared in upper Greenville County. Three daughters from his first marriage survive, in addition to several children from his second marriage. Dr. Robertson will be buried in Gaffney, Sunday at 2 p.m.. Robertson was born January 23, 1863, near Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in the southwestern corner of Glassy Mountain Township. He received his early education in the little free public school, Robertson School, which was in session for only three months of the year. After he became a Church member at eighteen, he went to Greer to school and then to Judson College in Hendersonville. Here he decided to become a Minister. While a student there he preached and taught school. In October 1888, he closed the Fall Creek School with an exhibition to let parents see what the children could do. The next year the Rev. B.P. Robertson preached his farewell sermon at North Fork Baptist Church on Sunday, and left on the six o'clock train for the seminary at Louisville, Kentucky. During the past year, Mr. Robertson has kept up his course of study at Judson College at Hendersonville, North Carolina, and supplied as a Pastor at North Fork Baptist Church and Glassy Mountain Churches; and during the summer taught the public school term in Saluda which also has been supplemented by private subscription. Our friend will be an acquisition to the seminary to which he goes as a young man of bright prospects. His Ministrial labors during the year have already no doubt borne fruit, and as a teacher he undoubtedly stands at the head of the list in Greenville County. Mr. Robertson has taught for three or four successive years in this school district during his vacation, amd I am informed that he made a request of the trustees to place him where they thought he would do the most good. The third year he was given Panther Gap school. When he was there, the door was missing, no windows and really some planks missing from the side of the school house and had been so for years. Now this is all remedied and the house nicely whitewashed, not only so, but is equipped with 30 improved seats, with desks, all done through the instrumentality of our friend being able to mold the trustees and patrons into one homogeneous mass and showing them what was necessary and needful. His average attendance ws also good, being perhaps fifty percent. We hope to have Mr. Robertson with us again next summer during his rest from the seminary.
