Read More	The Burlington Hawkeye, March 25, 1999 C. Esco Oberman Dr. C. Esco Oberman, 94, of Iowa City, died of cancer at 5:20 p.m. Monday, March 22, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. Born July 31, 1904, in Yarmouth, he was the son of Bismark A. and Samantha E. Calloway Oberman. On June 3, 1929, he married Avalon F. Law in Indianola. She preceded him in death. Dr. Oberman earned money as a young man washing dishes at a restaurant in Iowa City and did other odd jobs while attending the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where he received his bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1926, his master's degree in education in 1931, and his doctorate in clinical psychology and speech pathology in 1938. As an undergraduate, he was on the school's gymnastic team and was an editor for the University of Iowa "Hawkeye" yearbook of 1926. From 1938 to 1940, he was a research fellow at the University of Iowa. He was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Force Reserve and was called to active duty, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and discharged as a colonel. From 1946 to 1960, he was in charge of the Veterans Administration program for rehabilitation of disabled vets and the V.A. Education Program in the upper Midwest. During the 1950s, he taught for two years at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. From 1960 to 1965, he was a research fellow with U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, working with vocational rehabilitation programs. During the 1960s, he taught at Mankato State University in Minnesota until 1966, when he assumed duties as assistant professor in Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Iowa. He helped establish the University House in 1978, and served on the University House advisory committee. After retiring, he received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award for his dedication to the university. He was a Diplomat in Counseling of the American Board of Professional Psychology, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and member of the American Psychological Association, serving on national and international committees for the handicapped. He was a life member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association, member of Old Capital Club, sponsor of the annual Gymnastics Award Banquet and Oberman Trophy, and was a member of University of Iowa Foundation's Presidents Club. He was also a member of Ascension Episcopal Church at Stillwater, Minn., Iowa Letterman's Club, Delta Upsilon, Sigma Xi, National Rehabilitation Association, Who's Who in America and In the World, American Legion, Reserve Officers Association, Retired Officers Association and was a mason in New London Masonic Lodge. Survivors include 13 nieces, including JoAnn Pugh of Davenport and Bonnie Richart of rural Burlington; and three nephews. The family will receive friends following burial service Saturday, April 24, at Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Grove. The body of Dr. Oberman has been cremated. The memorial service for Dr. Oberman will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial of the cremains will be with military rites in Shinar Cemetery in Pleasant Grove. Memorials have been established to the Oberman Center for Advanced Studies at University of Iowa or to the donor's choice. Weir Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant is in charge of arrangements.
