Although in failing health for several years, he was confined to his bed only one day, the last. His last illness was of less than a week's duration, though he experienced a brief illness in January that kept him to his room for a number of days. Nothwithstanding the fact that he was 86 years of age, he carried on a limited practice almost up to the time of his death, although he had retired from the active practice of his profession many years ago. David Ramsey Hindman was born June 4, 1832, in Chester county, Pa., being the oldest of ten children. After arriving at young manhood he entered the Hahnemann Homeopathic medical college at Philadelphia, from which he was graduated in 1857. He began the practice of his profession at Cochranville, pa., residing there until the outbreak of the civil war, when he enlisted and served with credit to himself and honor to his country. He was married Jan. 3, 1861, to Miss Margaret Jackson, who preceded him in death by seventeen years and three days. Six children were born to this union, three of whom survive and were with him when he passed away, C.J. Hindman of Sheboygan, Wis., Mrs. Noyes Baker and Mrs. Lewis Wilson of Marion. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. H.J. Hanna and Mrs. Horace Hudders, both of Pennsylvania, and one brother, T.B. Hindman of Springville. Dr. Hindman came to Iowa in 1864, locating in Marion, where through his skill and untiring work he built for himself the largest medical practice in the community. For more than fifty years he ministered to the sick in this vicinity, keeping pace with the rapid strides in his profession. He was a progressive practitioner, putting all his energies and ambitions to his work. In company with Dr. Geo. E. Cogswell and others, Dr. Hindman organized in Marion in 1875, the first Homeopathic medical society in Linn county. This society was later broadened out and became the Central Iowa Homeopathic society. Dr. Hindman was its president in 1884. The doctor was prominent in fraternal work, being an active member of several local societies and orders. Previous to his coming here he joined the I.O.O.F. lodge at Cochranville, Pa., and always retained his subordinate membership there. He became a member of Centennial Encampment No.91, in which he occupied all the various chairs and positions of honor, and in January of the present years was installed scribe for the sixty-fourth consecutive term. He helped organize the Grove City Rebekah lodge and was its first Noble Grand, being the only male member of the Past Grand association. He was also a member of Robert Mitchell Post, G.A.R., and with the exception of one year has been elected annually as its surgeon. In 1916 he was elected medical director of the G.A.R., Department of Iowa. When a young man Dr. Hindman united with Fug's Manor Presbyterian church in Pennsylvania, transferring his membership to the First Presbyterian church of Marion on his removal to the west. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church conducted by the Rev. Harry Glenn Finney and the Odd Fellows. Burial was made in Oak Shade cemetery. The funeral was one of the largest and most impressive ever witnessed in Marion, members of various lodges to which he belonged and a vast concourse of friends coming to pay a final tribute of love and honor to the beloved pioneer who for so many years has been a central figure in the community's progress.
