Hindman of Springville, a brother of the late Dr. Hindman of this city, and who for many years resided on a farm in the vicinity of the county home, died at his home in Springville last night following an illness of one week's duration. He was well known in this city where his death will cause regret. Arrangements for the funeral will be announced later. The Marion Register April 26, 1918 In the death of Thomas Best Hindman, who died at his home in Springville on Thursday morning, April 18th, this community has lost one of its oldest and most respected citizens. Mr. Hindman had been confined to his bed for only a few days and seemed to be making favorable progress until only a short time before his death. The funeral was held at the home on Saturday, April 20th, at 10:30 a.m., the service being conducted by Rev. R.A. Brough, pastor of the Springville Presbyterian church. A guard of honor composed of veterans of the G.A.R., members of the Relief Corps and many friends and neighbors were in attendance. Besides the immediate family of the deceased, the following persons attended the funeral services from out of town: Mr. and Mrs. N.A. Baker and Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Wilson of Marion. Interment was made in Marion cemetery. Thomas Best Hindman was born Jan. 11th, 1834, in Chester county, Penn., where he grew to manhood. When the call of his country came, he enlisted for service in the Civil War, being a member of Company I, 175th Regiment, Penn. Infantry, 18th Army Corps. He served his country as a soldier for one year and was honorably discharged. In 1867 he came west, settling on a farm in Linn county, which was his home until he moved to Springville nine years ago. On Dec. 6th, 1871, he was united in marriage to Mary Wisemantle, who with three sons, two daughters and six grandchildren survive him, one son, William having died at eight years of age. The surviving children are John H. of Kellogg, Minn.; Clarence Thomas of Central City; David Franklin of Marion; Elizabeth (Mrs. George Joyce) and Mrs. Ada Belle both of Springville. He also leaves two sister, Mrs. H.J.Hannah of Scranton, Penn., and Mrs. Horance Hudders of Allentown, Penn. One brother, Dr. D.R. Hindman, passed to his reward only a few weeks ago. Mr. Hindman was one of the pioneer residents of Linn county and as such bore his part in the building up of the new country, and during the more than half a century that he has lived here, he has been known and respected for his uprightness of character and sincerity and kindness of heart. He was a quiet man, living a peaceable and unobtrusive life, but his friends who knew him and valued his worth will ever hold him in loving memory.
