Dick was born to his loving parents Richard & Rhea Young on 4-16-47 and was welcomed by an older brother Gerald. People measure life in a lot of different ways such as career, financial status, awards received and many more. As I reflect on my life, what matters most to me are the incredibly joyful relationships that I Have been privileged to have, beginning with the love and nurturing offered by my parents. I grew up on a farm near Woodbine, Iowa and have such fond memories of those I shared the education and many school activities with-students and faculty. Rich opportunities of new relationships continued as I found life-long friends and the love of my life while studying at Graceland University. Not only was I blessed to obtain a great education but the gift of many opportunities of leadership were also possible. Following Graceland graduation I fortunately attended and graduated from one of the top dental schools in the country. Go Hawks! After spending two years in the US Army as a dentist at Ft. Riley, KS, our family-now Sally and son Jeffrey and I moved to Knoxville, IA where son Bradley soon joined out family. The next thirty-five years were spent caring for the dental needs of such incredibly fine folks. The staff that worked along with me were such a blessing to both patients and myself. Participation in the Knoxville Rotary Club and other community groups has caused me to have such deep appreciation for our community. Participation with the American Cancer Society provided many years of a worthy focus on fighting the plague of cancer and offered various leadership roles that were so fulfilling for me. I have spent my lifetime trying to grow in faithfulness to Jesus. That journey has been so influenced by membership in the Community of Christ. Offices of priesthood during these many years have allowed me to have the holy joy of journeying with folks who are wanting to address their spiritual journey. Participating in health ministry teams to Haiti, Honduras, and US Native Americans has been a rich and humbling and life changing experience. The essence of all the above has been the peole that have been a part of and shared these life happenings with me. I am forever grateful for the joy of sharing life with so many wonderful folks especially my dear wife Sally and our two super sons and their families. As we've encountered the challenging health news these last couple of years, I want to affirm our sensed of the rich blessing of caring and prayerfulness that so many have offered us. Thank you! It has been a wonderful blessing that we describe as the mantle of God's rich grace. It is that grace that I credit for the wondrously rich life I've been privileged to live. God is good! The South African word "unbuntu" is used to convey "I am what I am because of who we are together". Any of the offices held, honors received, successes accomplished have this reality for me. Left to live on into the best that they can be are: Dick's wife Sally, son Jeffrey, and son Bradley & wife Rebecca & granddaughter Megan & grandsons Maxwell & Marley and a host of dearly beloved friends. Dick's brother Gerry died in a farm accident in 1949; dad, Richard died in 2001 and mother, Rhea in 2014. A Life to Remember... Funeral Service, Celebrate Community Church-Knoxville, Iowa Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 10:30 am Elder Bill McDonald, officiating. Interment: Dick will be cremated following the visitation and burial of cremains will be in the Woodbine Cemetery-Woodbine, Iowa at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Knoxville Panther Scholarship Foundation or to the Guthrie Grove Retreat Center. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Friday, May 1, 2015 at the Celebrate Community Church.
