Newland, 68, physician and surgeon at Belle Plaine since 1917, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Sunday evening, April 15, 1962, following a heart attack. Dr. Newland was born at Center Point, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Newland. He graduated from the Center Pointe High School in 1911, and took pre-medical work at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, from 1911-1913, where he was also captain of the baseball team. He then entered the State University of Iowa school of medicine and was graduated with a degree in medicine in 1917. He was the highest-ranking student in both his junior and senior years and was granted a junior and senior internship. He belonged to Phi Alpha Gamma fraternity. After graduation from the university he became associated with Dr. C.J. Snitkay at Belle Plaine, Iowa. Soon after his arrival here Dr. Snitkay was called into the service and the junior member of the firm continued to practice alone. Seven months later he also joined the army medical corps as a first lieutenant and with the American Expeditionary Forces served two years in France with a mobile unit. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre, with Palm Legion of Honor. While in Paris the two doctors met and decided that after the war they would again practice medicine in Belle Plaine, Iowa. Dr. Newland was discharged from the service at Camp Meritt, N.J., in June of 1920. For a good many years Drs. Snitkay and Newland operated the Corn Belt Hospital in Belle Plaine and built up a large practice in a four county area are of Benton, Iowa, Poweshiek and Tama counties. During World War II Dr. Snitkay became ill and Dr. Newland carried on alone. Dr. Snitkay died February 5, 1945. After World War II, his son, Dr. Don O. Newland and Dr. Norman C. Knosp joined the firm, but a short time later the younger Newland left to take advanced medical and surgical work at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He was replaced by Dr. Herbert Klemme who was at Belle Plaine 1 ½ years before going to Arkansas. Dr. Newland was a lifetime member of Jennings-Bradshaw Post No. 39, the American Legion, Benton County; and Iowa State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, Belle Plaine Commerce Club, Belle Plaine Country Club, Knights of Pythias, Masonic Lodge and the First Congregational Church at Belle Plaine. Dr. Newland and Miss Edith Audrey Hamlin were married May 15, 1918, at Cedar Rapids. Other survivors besides Mrs. Newland are: one son, Dr. Don O. Newland, Des Moines, and one daughter, Mrs. Harold J. (Jean) Swailes, Belle Plaine. There are six grandchildren: William, Jeffrey, and Michael Newland, Des Moines, and John, Don, and Tom Swailes, Belle Plaine. Service were held from Peffers Funeral Home, Belle Plaine, Wednesday, April 18, 1962, at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Alvin Boettcher, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiated. Mrs. Grace Morek was the organist. The body was cremated.
