Don Blanchette, First Congregational Church, officiating. Mrs. Newland, a long-time resident of Belle Plaine, died June 20, 1988, at Beverly Manor Care Center, Belle Plaine. Musical selections for the service were "In the Garden," "Abide With Me," and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee." Pallbearers were grandsons, Jeffrey Newland, Dr. William Newland, Michael Newland, John Swailes, Don Swailes, and Thomas Swailes. Mrs. Newland, a long-time resident of Belle Plaine, died June 20, 1988, at Beverly Manor Care Center, Belle Plaine. Newland was born January 24, 1892, in rural Harrison, Nebraska, a daughter of Douglas and Elva Crane Hamlin. On May 14, 1917 she married Dr. Don H. Newland in Cedar Rapids. In addition to being a homemaker, Mrs. Newland was a graduate of the University of Iowa School of Nursing and was a pioneer in the field of anesthetics. She and the late Dr. Newland were in the medical practice for many years in the Belle Plaine area. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Garden Club, and a long-time member of Hart Memorial Library, all in Belle Plaine. Survivors include a son, Dr. Don O. Newland; a daughter, Jean (Mrs. Harold) Swailes, Belle Plaine; three sisters, Evlyn Hensley and Claire McAninch, both of Exira; and Maude Kreamer, Florida; six grandsons and eight great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her husband on April 15, 1962, and her parents, five brothers and one sister. ..............................................
