TODD, PIONEER DENTIST SUCCUMBS Born In China Of Missionary Parents In 1868 Educated And Died In Same Hospital Dr. Fred Foster Todd, prominent dentist here for the past half century, succumbed on Saturday last at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, where many years ago he was educated for the dentistry. Though Dr. Todd had last week seemed to be rallying from an operation, late in the week he suffered a relapse. The son of the Rev. Elbert S. Todd and Emma M. Shaw Todd, he was born on September 12, 1868, in Kieu Kiang, China. Dr. Todd, whose father was a Methodist missionary there for a number of years, had the distinction of being the first white child to be born in the central part of China. He passed his seventy-third birthday just eight days prior to his passing. He was the ninth descendant of Christopher Todd, who was born at Pontefract, West Riding, Yorkshire, England, January 12, 1617. Christopher Todd came to Boston, Mass. on the "Hector" sometime in April of 1637. When he was a lad of only four years of age Dr. Todd's parents came to the United States. Dr. Todd, after several years of study, was graduated from the University of Maryland Hospital in 1889. The following year after his graduation he came to Crisfield and began his practice as a dentist near the present law offices of Mr. Clarence P. Lankford, on lower Main street. Prior to Dr. Todd's arrival in Crisfield, this community had been served for the most part by what was known in those days as traveling dentists, thus he became one of he first, if not the first, permanent dentists in this city. On through the years he continued his practice until he was removed to the hospital several weeks ago. On October 23rd, 1895, he wed the former Miss Fannie Pruitt, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Hope Pruitt, pioneer Somerset county residents. In his younger days Dr. Todd was quite a baseball enthusiast and was a member of the local representatives in an amateur Eastern Shore League that can be well remembered by a number of the older residents. Dr. Todd was a pitcher and is said to have been the first man on the Shore to master the curve ball. Dr. Todd was a leader among the men in his community then, as he was throughout his life here. He was a vital part of the community and in his missing he has left a great void that can never be completely filled, in the daily life of the city. Not only was he a pioneer dentist but throughout his career he kept on with the modern trend and enjoyed the patronage of a wide clientele. Besides his widow Dr. Todd is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Grace Adams, of Marion, two sons, Elbert N. Todd, of Atlantic City, N.J. and Fred Foster Todd, Jr., of Levack Ontario, Canada, and five grandchildren, Joyce Adams and Lewis Adams, Jr., of Marion, Virginia Fields Todd, of Levack, Ontario, Canada, and Phillip Todd and Elbert N. Todd, Jr., of this city. Largely attended funeral services were held on Tuesday morning at 10:00 o'clock from his late home. Rev. J.R. Bicking, pastor of the Immanuel Methodist Church, officiated at the final rites and was assisted by the Rev. Charles M. Elderdice, of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, and the Rev. J. Yancey Fincher, of the Baptist Temple. Interment was in Asbury cemetery. Honorary pall-bearers were Dr. William Coulbourne, Dr. George. Coulbourne, Mr. L.C. Quinn, Sr., Mr. Frank Jones, Mr. E.P. Wyatt and Mr. I.H. Tawes. Active pall-bearers included Mr. A. Wellington Tawes, Mr. W. Frank Daugherty, Mr. Hance L. Sterling, Mr. Norman Lewis, Mr. Oscar Howard and Mr. William Wooster.
