Description	:	Dr George J. Hand Aug 2, 1875-April 11, 1957 Dr. George J. Hand, Alliance's oldest physician who had practiced here since 1904, died Thursday evening in St. Joseph's Hospital. He was 81 years old and had been inactive for the last three years because of injury and illness. Hand, Alliance's oldest physician who had practiced here since 1904, died Thursday evening in St. Joseph's Hospital. He was 81 years old and had been inactive for the last three years because of injury and illness. Dr. Hand was born August 2, 1875, in Vermillion S.D. and moved to Hay Springs with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Redmond Hand, when a young boy. He graduated from the Hay Springs high school and attended old Chadron Normal for one year. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Iowa. He was a member of the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department, served as the City Physician for many years; was a member of the Box Butte County Medical Association; a member of the Nebraska Medical Association and had served on its medical advisory board. Through his younger years, he was an outstanding athlete and during the year he attended Chadron Normal he participated in most all sports. He was credited with winning a dual track meet by himself. His interest in boxing produced a fine program for young men in Alliance for many years. Doctor Hand spent his own money and gave many hours of his time to instruct young boxers. Periodically, he staged boxing shows and took his fighters to other towns. Some of his most prized possessions were letters from Alliance boys who have profited from his instruction and counsel. He was married to the late Nellie Mae Luton. She died only last year, November 12, 1956. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dick Leu and Mrs. Jack Gericke, both of alliance; one step-daughter, Mrs. Mahlon Strand of Alliance; and a step-son A.D. Salyard of Deadwood, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; one brother, Joe Hand of Omaha; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Landa Funeral Home with Father Frederick Snyder officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Obit provided by Pam Bowman Miller
