Richards Stricken Down With Apoplexy "The uncertainty of life and the suddenness with which the silver thread which connects man's soul with his body may be separated was again exemplified by the startling death of a prominent Norfolk citizen last evening. The end was unannounced and unthought of, as the grim reaper's victim had been enjoying an unusual proportion of good health and spirits during the day and no proportion of his decease was present to warn him of the frailty of human life. Dr. G. B. Richards was the gentleman who was summoned in the startling manner to meet his God. He had just returned from a drive to the country where he had visited a patient and, in company with George Dawson, had put up his team, and gone up-stairs to his rooms over the Variety store, it being the intention of the two gentlemen to talk over some business matters. Mr. Richards had just taken off his coat and hung up his hat when he dropped to the floor and it is thought that his death was almost instantaneous. This occurred at about 6 o'clock last evening. Mr. Dawson, as soon as he had realized what happened, hurriedly went for help, but no help was necessary or could bring the dead back to life. Dr. A. Bear and Dr. T. Kirby were summoned however and went to the dead man's room where they made an examination and pronounced his sudden death due to apoplexy. The deceased leaves a brother, and sister, L C. Richards and Mrs. Green, both of Lincoln, besides two daughters, Mrs. A. J. Durland of this city, who with her husband in now visiting at Middletown, N. Y., and Mrs. Nicola of Wellman, Iowa. All those relatives were immediately notified of his death and word was received that the doctor's brother would be here on the train today, while Mr. and Mrs. Durland would arrive on Sunday evening. The funeral will probably not be held before Monday, in order to give his daughter time in which to arrive. Dr. Richards was 69 years of age last July. He came to Norfolk in the spring of 1882 and went into partnership with Dr. Bear, with whom he practiced for two years. During his residence here he has gained considerable property, owning one of the important business blocks as well as valuable residence property. He continued in active practice up to the time of his death and all who knew him scarcely realized that he had almost reached his three score and tenth year."
