Description	:	Professor Harry Wyman Freeman, of Mt. Pleasant, husband of Margaret Ballantyne Smith Freeman, passed away November 15, 2012. Born at home in Mt. Pleasant on January 19, 1923, Harry was the youngest of seven sons of the late James Oswald Freeman and Mary Pope Frampton Freeman. Dr. Freeman grew up in the Old Village of Mt. Pleasant, husband of Margaret Ballantyne Smith Freeman, passed away November 15, 2012. Born at home in Mt. Pleasant on January 19, 1923, Harry was the youngest of seven sons of the late James Oswald Freeman and Mary Pope Frampton Freeman. Dr. Freeman grew up in the Old Village of Mt. Pleasant and graduated from the High School of Charleston, the College of Charleston, and earned his Masters from the University of South Carolina and a Phd. from Stanford University. Harry taught biology at the University of South Carolina for 9 years and the College of Charleston for 29 years, where he served as Chairman of the Biology Department for 18 years. He helped many students gain acceptance to MUSC as the pre-med advisor. He loved teaching, especially field trips, and mentored hundreds of students. Dr. Freeman was instrumental in the gift of Dixie Plantation to the College through his friendship with John Henry Dick. He felt privileged to serve the Agricultural Society of South Carolina and was a life member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served during WWII alongside five brothers and was the chaplain aboard his ship. Harry reveled in family life and adored his three grandchildren. He looked forward to his annual Christmas Oyster Roast where he would only serve oysters from McClellanville. Harry was an avid bird watcher and seldom missed a bird count. A humble and witty man, Harry always diverted attention from himself, and enjoyed time at home in his garden. Harry was a member of St. Andrew's Church in Mt. Pleasant his entire life. He served on the vestry and led the fundraising effort to build the Ministry Center, and enlisted his brother Frampton to build the large cross as its centerpiece. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Smith Freeman of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a son, Harry Wyman Freeman and wife, Susan of Birmingham, AL, a daughter, Margaret Freeman Carswell and husband, Richard of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and grandchildren Wyman Freeman, Lauren Mikell, and Matthew Mikell; and his dear friends Ted Stern and Barney Holt. He was preceded in death by his son-in law Dr. Danny Mikell; six brothers, James Oswald Freeman, Lewis Frampton Freeman, John Frampton Freeman, James Frampton Freeman, Willington Edmondston Freeman, and Campbell Courtenay Freeman; and his lifelong friends Bentley Ward and John Horlbeck. The relatives and friends of Harry Wyman Freeman are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Monday, November 19th, 2012 at St. Andrew's Church Ministry Center - Mt. Pleasant at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow at Christ Episcopal Churchyard. Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, November 18, 2012 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
