Read More	THE HAWK EYE Burlington, Iowa Wednesday, 4 June 2008 Harvey Benjamin Eastburn, son of Jesse Ola and Lucy Lenora Pidgeon Eastburn was born June 14, 1916 in a farmhouse on the banks of the Des Moines River near the town of Eldon in Wapello County, Iowa. He passed away 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at his home in Burlington. His boyhood was spent on a farm near Salem in Henry County, Iowa. His education through eighth grade was at Hobson School, a one-room schoolhouse 1 1/2 miles from his home. High school was at Salem High School, graduating in 1934. He attended Iowa Wesleyan College, receiving a BA degree in 1938. He entered the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1942. In the middle of his senior year of medical school, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Elizabeth Anderson at Oskaloosa, Iowa (this was the best thing that ever happened to him). Following medical school, he served a rotating internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He entered the US Army June 3, 1943, and served as a Captain in the Medical Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific, China, Burma and India Theaters with the 53rd Portable Surgical Hospital. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Chinese Gold Star of Honor. Following discharge from the Army in November 1945, he entered a residency training program in anesthesiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals. After completion of this, he and family moved to Burlington January 3, 1948, where he started a private practice of Anesthesiology, which continued until 1985. He was active in the Des Moines County Medical Society, the Iowa State Medical Society, the Iowa Society of Anesthesiology and the American Society of Anesthesiology. He served as a District Director on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiology from 1959 to 1980. He was a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesia. He served on the Board of Directors of Burlington Memorial Hospital from 1967 to 1974. He belonged to the New Crystal Lake Club and the Burlington Golf Club. He enjoyed duck hunting, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his sister, Marian Allen; four children, Judith Eastburn, Patricia Simpson, James Eastburn and Caroline Atkins; six grandchildren, Anna, James, Joseph, Thomas, Luke and Matthew; and two great grandchildren, Zachary and Sophia. Dr. Eastburn has donated his body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. A memorial service will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Burlington Hospice Organization.
