A funeral service for Dr. Fred Herzog will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, June 9, 2016, at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 East South Street, Manly, with Pastor Don Preston officiating. Burial will be in the Manly cemetery with graveside military honors conducted by members of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post, 110, Manly. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. H. Fred Herzog Jr. was born on November 4, 1922, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Henry Fred and Tillie (Appel) Herzog. He was raised on a farm near Melbourne, Iowa. He started school at the age of 4 and graduated high school in 1939, followed by two years at Marshalltown Jr. College. He received his BA degree at the University of Iowa in 1943. He was also a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Because of World War II, he was drafted out of Marshall County to Camp Barkley, Texas, for basic training. While there, Fred was accepted into the Army Specialized Medical Training Program. He was then transferred back to the University of Iowa to begin Dental School. He was added to the 1944 roster of the Iowa football team as an offensive guard, under Coach Slip Madigan. He also became a member of the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, and graduated with a D.D.S. degree in the spring of 1947. Fred married his college sweetheart, Jacqueline Martineau, on June 7, 1946, in Iowa City. His first practice was in Bedford, Iowa, before moving to Manly, Iowa, in 1948, where he made his home for 65 years. In 1951, Fred was called back into active duty because of the Korean Conflict, moving to Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington. He also spent service time in Montgomery, Alabama. Returning to Manly in 1953, he resumed his practice for the next 37 years, retiring in June of 1990. "Doc" Herzog loved the community where he lived and did whatever it took to promote the businesses and activities in Manly. He was active in the Jaycees, Booster Club, American Legion, Lions Club, served on the North Central School Board for 6 years, Elks Club in Mason City, past Shriner, and Master Mason. He was most proud of his part in the development of the Pioneer Town and Country Club, serving as the first secretary/treasurer. Fred loved to "talk Sports" with anyone, especially if it involved the Iowa Hawkeyes or the St. Louis Cardinals. He was kind and caring to everyone he met. Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Linda (Larry) Bachman, of Spring, Texas, Heidi Rowe, of Cedar Falls, and daughter-in-law, Gail Herzog, of Iowa City; four grandchildren: Tim (Benita) Herzog, Kami (Pat) Galles, Jennifer Stuhr and Grant (Ciara Immel) Rowe; five great-grandchildren: Mia and Michael Herzog, Lilliana Stuhr and Alaina and Kreighton Galles. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Katherine and Caroline; wife Jackie and son David.
