Description	:	Dr. James Max Barbee,age 84, died October 7th in Lincoln, NE. He was born in Sutton, NE, November 3, 1923, to Dr. James Sheldon and Opal P. (Foster) Barbee. He attended school in Sutton Public Schools graduating in 1941. He attended Doane College, Crete, NE for the one year pre-veterinary medicine course before entering the Kansas State School of Veterinary Medicine. During World War II he was in the Army Specialized Training program. He earned his degree in veterinary medicine in May 1945 and returned to Sutton, where he started practicing with his father (later joined by his brother).... Read More	Dr. James Max Barbee,age 84, died October 7th in Lincoln, NE. He was born in Sutton, NE, November 3, 1923, to Dr. James Sheldon and Opal P. (Foster) Barbee. He attended school in Sutton Public Schools graduating in 1941. He attended Doane College, Crete, NE for the one year pre-veterinary medicine course before entering the Kansas State School of Veterinary Medicine. During World War II he was in the Army Specialized Training program. He earned his degree in veterinary medicine in May 1945 and returned to Sutton, where he started practicing with his father (later joined by his brother). He continued in this practice for forty years. On April 17, 1949, he was joined in marriage to Betty Lavonne Gustafson of Hordville, NE. They had three sons: James Carl, Steven George, and Thomas David. He was a member of the Federated Church serving as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, lay leader and on several boards. He was moderator of the U.C.C. South Central Association and of the Nebraska State U.C.C. Conference. He was president of the Sutton School Board for three terms during redistricting and passage of the bond issue for the new high school, and served on the Sutton City Council two terms. He served on the Sutton Community Council and was instrumental in starting the Sutton Community Foundation, Inc., of which he served as first president. He was a member of the American and Nebraska Veterinary Medical Associations, American Assn. of Bovine Practitioners, American Assn. of Swine Practitioners, Argonne United #61 of the American Legion, and Lions International. Survivors include sons James of South Pasadena, CA, Steven and wife Debbie of Dover Plains, NY, Thomas and wife Peggy of Lincoln, NE, grandchildren: Paul of Grand Junction, CO, James R. of Lincoln, NE, David of Madison, WI, Christopher of Arlington Heights, IL, Lauren of Lincoln and Madison of Lincoln, NE, sister, Iris (and Ron) Barnett of Geneva, NE and brother, Dr. Larry (and Sallie) Barbee of Sutton, NE. Preceded in death by wife Betty, and parents.
