Description	:	Jerry B. Burkey, DVM, 72, of Milford, Nebraska, and formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015 at his home in Milford. Jerry was born on September 6, 1942, on a farm west of Milford, the second of four children born to Burdette and Mary (Stutzman) Burkey. Read More	Jerry B. Burkey, DVM, 72, of Milford, Nebraska, and formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015 at his home in Milford. Jerry was born on September 6, 1942, on a farm west of Milford, the second of four children born to Burdette and Mary (Stutzman) Burkey. As a young man, he accepted Christ as his Savior, and was baptized at East Fairview Mennonite Church. As a young boy, he attended District 18 Rosedale country school and graduated from Milford Public School with the class of 1960. Jerry was involved in 4-H and FFA. He furthered his education at Kansas State University in Manhattan, receiving his bachelors degree and doctorate degree in veterinary medicine in 1968. Jerry was united in marriage to Susan Troyer on June 5, 1969 and to this union three children were born: Carrie, Tom and Tyler. He was employed by the USDA in Beltsville, Maryland, as an assistant herd veterinarian. They returned to Nebraska and made their home in Lincoln where he started his small animal practice, founding the Clock Tower Animal Clinic. He built his clientele serving several generations of families and their pets for 42 years. For most of his life, Jerry raised, bred and showed registered American Quarter Horses. He had the talent of recognizing quality livestock. He served as a board member of Sunrise Therapeutic Horseback Riding. Jerry retired in 2013 and he and Susan moved back to the family farm in 2014. Jerry had a passion for agriculture and his life-long hobby was conservation of the land, taking care of cattle and horses, and most of all his family, especially his children and grandchildren. Jerry has been a member of First Mennonite Church in Lincoln since 1971 where he served in many leadership capacities including treasurer and Sunday school teacher. He also was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He is survived by his wife, Susan, Milford; children and spouses, Carrie Burkey, Tom and Jen Burkey, and Tyler and Megan Burkey; six grandchildren, Kyley, Kelsey, Kieran, Auren, Sydney and Lucas Burkey; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Galen Schweitzer, and Kathy and Bernie Stych; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob and Marcia Troyer, Kathy and Dave Stutzman, Dan Troyer, Joe and Sandy Troyer, Steven and Theresa Troyer; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burdette and Mary Burkey; brother, Gene Burkey; parents-in-law, Milton and Betty Troyer. A funeral service Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at First Mennonite Church in Lincoln. Interment in Blue Mound Cemetery, Milford.
