He was born in Neff's Mills, Huntington County, September 3, 1884, a son of John and Deborah Oaks Johnston. On October 12, 1914, he married Helen Foster Greer, who died November 2, 1954. He was a 1911 graduate of the Hahneman Medical School of Philadelphia. He entered private practice in Canonsburg in 1912 where he had been in continuous residence until his retirement in 1960. Dr. Johnston was on the senior staff of surgery at Canonsburg General Hospital and was past president of the Canonsburg Hospital Medical Staff. In 1927, he took a post-graduate course in ear, nose and throat surgery in Vienna, Austria. He had recently been awarded a plaque for 50 years of service by the State Medical Society. Dr. J. A. Johnston Sr. Dr. Johnston belonged to the Washington County, the Pennsylvania Slate and the American medical associations. A fellowship in the industrial association was conferred upon him in 1939. He maintained offices in the Citizens Trust building in Canonsburg until 1939 when he moved to the Johnson Building at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Pike street. He was a member of the University Club of Pittsburgh; the Tyrian Lodge No. 612, F. and A. M. and the Scottish Rite, both in Wilmerding, and the Syria Temple, Pittsburgh. Dr. Johnston was a member of the First Methodist Church of Canonsburg where he had served as a Sunday School teacher and a member of the official board. Surviving are three sons, Dr. John A. Johnston Jr. of Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburgh, Wesley Greer Johnston, D. D. S., of Bridgeville, and Dr. David Oaks Johnston of Boston, Mass., and 10 grandchildren.
