Larkin Was One of County's Top Physicians, Business and Civic Leaders. The name of Dr. John Charles Larkin stands out as one of Hillsboro's and Highland County's most widely known physicians, business, civic and fraternal leaders of the 20th century. He died at the age of 82 on May 7, 1951, at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, where he had been a patient since Sept. 12, 1949. He had practiced medicine in this community for 53 years but discontinued practice in July, 1949, because of his health. In addition to his prominence in the medical field, he was widely known through his business and fraternal connections. He was formerly one of the county's largest landowners. At the time of his death he was president of the Farmers and Traders Bank of Hillsboro, a position to which he was first elected on January 8, 1929. He had been elected a director of the same bank on January 10, 1911. He was formerly president of the Home Building and Loan Association and was serving as vice president at the time of his death. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church here and a member of many fraternal organizations, including the Elks, Masons and Odd Fellows. He had been a member of the Elks and Masons for 50 years or more. The American Legion and Sons of the American Revolution counted him among their members. Dr. Larkin served as president of the Highland County Medical Society for 25 years. He was also president of the Highland County Board of Health for a great number of years. He was born June 1, 1868, in Highland County. He graduated from the Medical College at the University of Cincinnati in 1896. All his medical practice was conducted in Highland County. He completed postgraduate work at John Hopkins University, Baltimore in 1913. During World War I he served as first lieutenant in the Medical Corps. Hundreds of young men entering the armed forces were examined by the Hillsboro physician during his lifetime of practice. He served as examining physician for men of three wars. At one time he was physician for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Norfolk and Western Railroad. In 1950, he was awarded a Certificate of Distinction by the Ohio State Medical Association for 50 or more years of active medical practice in Ohio. He held the position of Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He formerly owned about 1,000 acres of land along Rocky Fork Creek, but had disposed of all farm land before his death. About 600 acres of the land went for the Rocky Fork Lake project. A son, Richard, died in April, 1939, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
