Read More	Dr. John Gilbert, "Country Doctor," Passes Monday The "country doctor," John Gilbert, who began practicing medicine in Garfield county in the days when it took a full day to complete a call to the Mayview district, died Friday, September 9 at his Pomeroy home. He was 88 years, 8 months and 14 days old. A typical country doctor of the old school, Dr. Gilbert had a keen sense of humor and even a newcomer to Pomeroy has undoubtedly heard one or more stories affectionately told about the doctor. He came to Pomeroy in 1904 and practiced medicine continuously here for 34 years, until retiring in 1938. Dr. Gilbert was born on a farm in Monroe county, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles from Philadelphia on November 27, 1866. At the age of three, the family moved to another farm in southern Wisconsin. After finishing the fifth reader at school (about the eighth grade) Dr. Gilbert followed many jobs, such as working on the railroad and clerking in a drug store. It was while clerking in the drug store and driving a team for a doctor that he became interested in medicine at the doctor's urging. The young man didn't think that he had enough education, but secretly quit his job and hurried off to college where he took examinations for entrance to Rush medical college. Meets Dr. Black His admittance to the school surprised him, but he went through the tough course with ease. It was at the school that he met Dr. Clark Black and they became good friends. This association was later to bring Dr. Gilbert to Pomeroy. After graduation from Rush, the young doctor went to Rockton, Illinois for a year to help out a doctor who was on vacation. In 1900 Dr. Gilbert went out to the new state of Oklahoma, which had been opened up for settlement not many years before. The town where he picked to settle was called Tonhawa. While in Oklahoma Dr. Gilbert corresponded with his old schoolmate, Dr. Black, who in the meantime had settled in Pomeroy. In his letters Dr. Black always told his old friend about wonderful Garfield county and Pomeroy and so Dr. Gilbert decided to come west and see for himself. After arriving in Pomeroy in 1904 Dr. Gilbert was associated with Dr. Black for three years. Horse and Buggy Days Gilbert used a horse and buggy for four years on his calls in the country before getting his first automobile in 1908. His first auto didn't erase his traveling difficulties completely as the country roads were terrible in those days and he was always getting stuck in the mud. Know to the people for his straightforward philosophy on life as well as medicine, the doctor had a golden rule that he followed: "My wife comes first, my friends second and money comes last." He and Nellie Barron were married in Pomeroy on November 26, 1908. Mrs. Gilbert came to Pomeroy in January 1908 as manager of the telephone company and the doctor has told their courtship with a smile. "The morning after she got to Pomeroy she came across the hall from her office to mine to ask me for something for a cold. I took up all of her time after that and we were married eight months later." Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert used to make many calls together. 2,000 Babies He was once asked to estimate the number of babies he had delivered in the county and he gave the figure of "about 2,000." As health officer and birth recorder, Dr. Gilbert recalled a few years ago the Seeley Allen was the first baby registered in Garfield County under the first registration laws. Up to a few years ago when his health began to fail, the doctor had never been sick a day in his life, never had a broken bone or been hurt in an accident. After retiring in 1938, Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert enjoyed a quiet home life. Dr. Gilbert loved to chat with his neighbors and hundreds of friends and the Gilbert home always had lots of visitors. Dr. Gilbert's parents died in Illinois in 1904 and a year after, Dr. Gilbert went back to Illinois for a visit with his brothers and sisters. In 1934 and 1938, Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert and sister, then living in Selah, Washington, went back East for visits. Besides his wife, Nell, at the Pomeroy home, his sister, Mrs. Sarah Stockpole of Winslow, Illinois is listed as the only surviving relative. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, September 12 from the Richardson Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert V. Lancaster of the Episcopal church officiating. Singer was Mrs. Jey Jechort. Honorary pallbearers were E.O. Crump, Charles Kausche, Tex Parris, Bob Young, C.A. McCabe, John Ailiss and Tom Bunch. Active pallbearers were Floyd Kausche, Pat McCabe, Dr. R.J. Welland, John Cardwell, James Weimer and John McKeirnan. Interment was in the city cemetery (source unknown, c. 9 Sep 1955).
