His obituary in the Washington Post, March 19, 1900. The funeral of Dr. John J. Culler, who was found dead on Wednesday, took place Saturday from his late residence at Jefferson, Frederick County. Services were conducted by Rev. Samuel A. Hedges, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, of Jefferson, assisted by Rev. John Bowers, of Washington; Rev. George Bowers, of Hagerstown and Rev. M. L. Beard, of the Lutheran Church, of Middletown. The pall-bearers were Edwin R. Remsburg, Edgar Feaster, John Thrasher, R. L. Shaff, C. K. Shaff, S. W. Gregg, and M. R. Etchison. Interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery at Jefferson. LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT Dr. John Jacob Culler, One of the Oldest and Most Prominent Physicians of the County Found Dead at Jefferson. Dr. John Jacob Culler, of Jefferson, this valley, who was one of the oldest and most prominent physicians in this county, was found death last Tuesday afternoon in the barnyard at his residence, his sudden death having resulted from heart trouble. His death is supposed to have occurred about half and hour before his body was found by Mr. George Lewis. Dr. Culler was a son of the late Capt. Henry Culler, and was born near Jefferson November 28, 1822. After completing his elementary education in the public school he attended Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, for two years. He then took up the study of medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, graduating at the end of a three years' course, in the Spring of 1848. Soon afterwards he began the practice of his profession in Middletown, and remained here for some time. Then he was located in our neighboring town of Boonsboro', Washington county, for two years, returning at the expiration of that period to his old home where he has been actively occupied in practice for nearly half a century. The poor have found in him a friend indeed, and he has cancelled thousands of dollars of just fees upon his books against persons whom he believed unable to pay him without a great sacrifice. Generous and unselfish, he always gave his services free to those worthy of being assisted, and many in number are those who are thus indebted to him. Thus did he carry out in his actual life his exalted mission and the Christian faith he professed. For more than forty years he had been an officer in the Lutheran church at Jefferson, and for a long time leader of the choir and superintendent of the Sunday school, holding the latter position at the time of his death. In his political views he was a stalwart Republican, and he was always a true friend to the colored race. During the Civil war he gave his two old slaves their freedom, but it was not accepted, and he afterwards cared for them, paying all of their expenses until their death. In 1852 he was married to Sarah, daughter of the late Philip Routzahn, of this valley who survives him. No children were born to them. He is also survived by two brothers, Col. Henry Culler, of Frederick, and William Culler, of Virginia. Funeral services will be held this (Friday) morning in the Lutheran church at Jefferson.
