But few citizens outside of Corning was as well known and highly respected in Corning as Dr. Peregrine. He possessed an open hearted, jovial disposition that made him firm and fast friends. He could always be found advocating what he thought to be right and was fearless in expressing his convictions. If he thought a man was a thief, he said so openly and above board, and like all men of that character, he made some enemies and many warm friends. He was known by all to be an open hearted, generous, sympathetic citizen who will be greatly missed in the community where he has rendered professional and neighborly services for over a quarter of a century. He was the oldest son of the late Rev. Joseph Peregrine, who died about a year ago, and was born in Jasper County, Indiana, April 20, 1814 and died at 1 o'clock a.m., July 2, 1903, at his home in Brooks of neuralgia of the heart, aged 59 years, 2 months, and 3 days. The subject of this sketch came with his parents to this county in 1870 and located a few miles south of Brooks. When the war between the states was declared, he, in company with a number of others, marched from Quincy to Council Bluffs where he joined Co. I, 4th Iowa under command of Capt. E. Y. Burgan. At the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, March 7, 1892, he was severely wounded in the leg by a mini ball which he carries to his last resting place and from the effects of which he was left a cripple for life and suffered untold agonies. He was discharged at Council Bluffs for wounds received and soon after took up the study of medicine in the Keokuk Medical College. He went to Midway, Spencer County, Indiana, where he practiced medicine for several years and where he married Miss Melvina McCoy, February 25, 1868. To this union was born two sons, Charles and Corrie, who reside at Brooks. In 1874 he returned to Brooks where he has since resided and practiced his chosen profession. Mrs. Pegerine died May 4, 1890 and later he married Miss Nettie Brown and to them was born one son, Carl, aged 15, who resides at the home. He joined the M. E. Church while a resident of Indiana. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity of this city and of the Royal Arch Chapter. Besides a step-mother, wife and three sons, he leaves five brothers and five sisters as follows; Mrs. Elizabeth Hanley of Kimman, Indiana, Mrs. Amanda McKay and George R. Peregrine of Fulerton, Nebraska, Chas. S. Peregrine of Rockford, Montana, Mrs. Ella Wilson of Bloomfield, Nebraska, Edgar Peregrine and Miss Mary Peregrine of Brooks; Mrs. Adna Parker of Brooks, Mrs. Olive Harvey, all of Clay Center, Nebraska, Walter and Homer of Brooks, besides a wide circle of friends to mourn their loss. The funeral will take place today from his late residence at 11 o'clock conducted by Elder E. f. Loake, of Newton, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity. Interment in the Methodist Grove Cemetery. A queer coincidence might here be mentioned in the lives of Dr. Peregrine and Mr. Clark Lawrence. The both marched from Quincy to Council Bluffs, joined the same company and regiment, were both wounded in the same battle, and their deaths occurred with six hours of each other.
