Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, June 18, 1925; pg. 1 Joseph Riley Buffington, physician and surgeon, was born in Columbus City, Louisa county (sic), Iowa, January 5, 1840. His parents, James L. and Eliza Ann (Sleeth) Buffington, were pioneers in Iowa territory, having located there in 1838, soon after the Black Hawk war. His father was a native of Ohio, and his mother was a member of one of the old Virginia families. His early education was received in the pioneer schools of his native state. Later, he attended school at Mount Pleasant, and finished his literary studies in the Iowa State University at Iowa City. Early in his life he selected medicine for his profession, and commenced study under a preceptor, Dr. J.M. Robertson of Columbus City, but upon the breaking out of the Civil War, his inclination was to become a soldier and in 1862 he enlisted in Company F, 25th Iowa, in which he was made a corporal, and later advanced to sergeant. He served in Sherman's division and remained with him throughout the war, serving in sixty-four engagements including twenty-seven hard fought battles during the siege of Vicksburg and around Look Out Mountain, and accompanied the forces of Sherman on the famous march to the sea. He was honorably discharged on June 7, 1865, and then returned to Iowa and resumed his study of medicine. He read in the office of Dr. S.H. Stutsman in Derby, Ia., and assisted him in his practice, commencing actively the practice of medicine in 1873. In 1875 he graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk, Iowa. The doctor was united in marriage with Cynthia A. Sargent to whom three children were born, two of whom, Flora E. of Pueblo, Colorado, and William Q. of Portland, Oregon, are living. The doctor continued to practice at Derby, Iowa, until March, 1880, when he changed his field of labor to Liberty, Nebraska. There he remained for ten years, removing to Nelson, Nebraska, in March, 1890, where he has since made his home. In 1891 in company with Mr. Knapp he purchased a drug store in which partnership he continued for ten years. In 1884 he was elected to the state legislature rendering valuable service. Dr. Buffington is a Past Master in the Masonic Order, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Nelson. He was married on November 22, 1881, to Mrs. Josephine Estelle Hickock of Moline, Illlinois, daughter of Robert and Marion (Kelsey) Malcom. To this union were born three children: LeRoy Alvin of Nelson; Fred R. who died October 23, 1918, during the Flu epidemic, and Mrs. Nellie Marion deBauernfeind of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The doctor was bedfast since March 27th, 1925. He was given the most loving and skillful care but his strength gradually failed and he peacefully passed away at his home in Nelson Monday morning, June 15, 1925, aged 85 years, 5 months, and 10 days. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife and four children, three sisters and one brother, and a host of friends who have many kind things to say in testimony of the affection and esteem in which he is held. Throughout his sickness the doctor was very patient and uncomplaining. This community feels greatly indebted to Dr. Buffington, who through all these years has given himself so unsparingly to the ministry of healing and the service of the community, the state and the nation. His love of the flowers and the little children testified to the whiteness of his soul. He was ready for the great change. The kindly benediction of his life and service will linger forever in the hearts and lives of that great company who have been blessed in body, mind and soul by his golden deeds through the years. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, June 16, 1925, at 2:30. Three selections of special music were rendered by the Male Quartette, which were greatly appreciated. The pastor, Vincent R. Beebe, was assisted in the service by Rev. Jones of the Presbyterian church, W.R. Arnold, pastor of the Christian church, and Mr. Dusenbery. The Masonic Order was in charge of the services. The body was laid to rest in the Nelson cemetery (sic), where the Masonic Order conducted the ritual of the burial service. There were a large audience present to pay a last loving tribute to the departed, there being a large representation from the Masonic Order, Eastern Star, and American Legion, as well as comrades of the Civil War. The bereaved xxfiefltffffiaoiil (sic) War. The bereaved have the tender sympathy of their many friends in their sorrow. The pall bearers were C.R. Imler, Charles Williams, Wilbur Portwood, W.L. Bunn, H.E. Goodrich and Worthy Wood of the Masonic Order. The honorary pall bearers were Barney Tripp, H.W. Cottle, Cliff Bottenfield, Paul Littrell, Roy Carroll and Ben Stahl of the American Legion.
