Read More	MEDICAL RESEARCHER, DR WANNAMAKER DIES St Matthews - Dr Lewis William Wannamaker 59, a SC native best known for his studies of streptococcal disease, died Thursday during a visit to St Matthews. Born in St Matthews, he was a son of Mrs Lucille Long Wannamaker and the late Whitfield Wesley Wannamaker. He received his pre-medical education at Emory University and his medical degree from Duke University in 1946. Dr Wannamaker, a professor of pediatrics and microbiology associated with the University of Minnesota Medical School, was widely known for his work on the relationship of streptococcal sore throat and rheumatic fever. As a research resident and fellow with Western Reserve University in Cleveland, he was associated with the streptococcal disease lab at F E Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. Dr Wannamaker was named a career investigator-a lifetime appointment-by the American Heart Association and was a US senior scientist awardee of the Alexander Von Homboldt Foundation. He also was awarded the prestigious Robert Koch Award by the West German government. In January, he was named to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science. Dr Wannamaker, whose writings include almost 200 technical papers and text, book chapters, also held a 10 year appointment to the World Health Organization's expert advisory panel on bacterial diseases. Surviving are his widow, Mrs Hallie Ethridge Wannamaker of St Paul, Minnesota; daughters Dr Julia Lucile Wannamaker of Minneapolis, Hallie Ann Wannamaker of New York City and Mrs Ralph Allen of Valdosta, Georgia; a son, Whitfield Claude Wannamaker of Overland Park, Kansas; his mother of St Matthews, brothers Wesley Keitt Wannamaker and Joe Long Wannamaker of St Matthews, and granddaughters. Services will be held at 3:30 pm today at St Matthews Presbyterian Church, with burial in West End Cemetery, Orangeburg. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg is in charge. March 26, 1983 The State ------------- By Theodore Woodward, MD: Lewis was mentor for scores of trainees now in positions of scientific leadership throughout the world. He taught by example and a quiet, determined insistence on the best efforts in research and in writing. His judgment was sought constantly by students and colleagues at Minnesota, and his door was always open. Investigators from England, Germany, Egypt, Poland, New Zealand, India, Scandinavia, and the Orient spent time in his laboratory and were in frequent communication, since Lew shared his knowledge, counsel, and judgment with scientists throughout the world. As much as Lewis accomplished as an investigator and as a clinician, he may have been appreciated most for his qualities as a human being. He was soft spoken, kind, deliberate in his actions, and slow to anger, but in matters of principle he could be extremely obstinate. He also possessed a rich sense of humor. Some of these qualities were brought home to me by two incidents following his death. I called a mutual friend to tell him that Lew had died and his response included, among other things, "He was some kinda guy." Another mutual friend told me that, in spite of Lew's national and international prominence and influence, he had never heard one derogatory word about Lewis Wannamaker—a remarkable accomplishment indeed. I have never known a finer man.
