Burial will follow in West End Cemetery. Joseph "Joe" Long Wannamaker went home to be with the Lord on February 18, 2009, in Naples, Florida. He was born on December 21, 1930, and was the third son of the late Whitfield Wesley Wannamaker and Lucile Long Wannamaker. He was predeceased by two brothers, Dr. Lewis William Wannamaker and Wesley Keitt Wannamaker. Joe attended St. Matthews public schools and was graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1948. His college years took him to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and he later graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1953. On April 11, 1953, he married the love of his life, Winifred Lynn Kendall, of Rochester, New York. Winnie and Joe were married for 55 years and were blessed with four children: Win Anne (Ed) Chewning, Kendall "Kent" Whitfield (Mary Lil) Wannamaker, Claire (Don) McCunniff, and Jo Ellen (Mark) Ott. Their family later grew to include eight grandchildren: Charles William Hipp, Jr., Mary Win Hipp King, Helen Kendall McCunniff, Lindsey Long Wannamaker, Donald Allen McCunniff, Jr., Kendall Whitfield Wannamaker, Jr., Virginia Lynn Ott, and Joesy Lane Ott. Joe loved the land and farmed with his parents and brother for 35 years, carrying on the family tradition of growing fine cotton and seed at W. W. Wannamaker Seed Farms, Inc. until he retired in 1987. Along with his brother, Wes, he operated a cotton gin that served the farming community for many years. Joe received the prestigious "National Ginner of the Year" award in 1976. As a leader in agriculture, he introduced "In-Row Subsoiling," which was later adopted by the entire region. For all of his adult life, Joe expressed great concern for the growth and preservation of his community and believed that this could be achieved through the education of its young people. Based on this conviction, he along with other community leaders founded Calhoun Academy in 1970 where he served as Chairman of the Board for the next 20 years. Watching the school grow and prosper brought Joe infinite joy and satisfaction. In their retirement years, Winnie and Joe traveled extensively throughout the United States in their motor home and were often joined by friends, family, and grandchildren. They discovered Naples, Florida, in the early 1990's and enjoyed wintering there with a multitude of new friends from all over the country. The celebration of Joe's life will be at his home on Monday, February 23, at 3 p.m. with his long-time friend, the Reverend J. Robert Koch, officiating. Pallbearers are grandsons: Charles Hipp, Donny McCunniff, and Kendall Wannamaker; sons-in-law, Don McCunniff and Mark Ott; and nephew, Keitt Wannamaker. Honorary pallbearers are: Richard "Dick" Beasley, James Council, James "Jim" Rice, Julian "Junie" Fair, Robert "Crusty" Rosemond, Othniel Wienges, J. D. "Pally" Wiles, and John "Butch" Droege. Joe will be remembered for his devotion to family and friends, love of people, and unselfish generosity to the community. The family would like to express their most heartfelt appreciation for the loving care and kindness extended to Joe and Winnie during his illness. Memorials can be made to Calhoun Academy, P.O. Box 526, St. Matthews, SC, 29135 for those who wish. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
