Heimlich, Ph.D., 38, head of the biology department of Valparaiso university and a graduate and former faculty member of Purdue, died early Friday at the family home in Valparaiso after a brief illness of pneumonia. He was well known on the Purdue campus and in Lafayette. Mr. Heimlich was born in Reynolds, April 13, 1890, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Heimlich. He was graduated from Monticello high school and then entered Purdue, earning his B. S. Degree in science in 1914, and a M. S. degree in 1916. Later, he won his doctor's degree at the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Heimlich was an accomplished artist and while at Purdue was cartoonist for the Exponent, and art editor for the Debris. JOINED FACULTY. Following his graduation, he joined the Purdue faculty, having charge of botany for several years. Three years ago he went to Valparaiso university, when it was taken over by the Lutheran church to become head of its botany department. Mr. Heimlich was a member of the American association for the Advancement of Science, the Botanical society of America, and the Indiana academy on the flora of White county, of which he made a comprehensive study. ACTIVE IN CHURCH. While a resident of Lafayette and West Lafayette, Mr. Heimlich was an active member of St. James Lutheran church, and served as president of its Men's club. In 1916 he was married to Miss Sarah C. Sickinger, to which union one daughter, Leah Eleanor, was born. Surviving are the widow and daughter; his parents, of Reynolds; two brothers, J. Clemens of Reynolds, and H. Waldemar, of Monon, and two sisters, Misses Hilda and Frieda Heimlich of Reynolds. Funeral services will be held at Valparaiso, Sunday, and at Reynolds Monday. REYNOLDS, Ind., Oct. 16. -- Largely-attended funeral services were held here Monday afternoon for Dr. Louis F. Heimlich, Ph.D., head of the biology department of Valparaiso university, who died at his home there last Friday. Services were held at Valparaiso, Sunday, and the body was brought here overland Monday to the home of the parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Heimlich, where short services were held, followed by services in St. James Lutheran church, which was filled to overflowing. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Herbert Petrich, St. James pastor, and Dean H. H. Kumnick, of Valparaiso university, gave an impressive eulogy, speaking of the deceased as a learned scientist, Christian educator, and born naturalist. Twenty faculty members of Valparaiso led by Dean F. Kroencke and all in cap and gown, accompanied the body here, six acting as active and the remainder as honorary pallbearers. A student quartet sang at the church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The body was garbed in the gown which holders of a doctor's degree wear. Among those from out-of-town attending the funeral was a delegation from the men's club of St. James Lutheran church, Lafayette, of which the deceased was formerly president, including John H. Schuessler, Charles H. Beck, Herman Bahls and William Haderle. Present also from Lafayette were Mr. and Mrs. Chris Sickinger, parents of the widow, and Mrs. Ernest Lange, her sister, and family. Many others were present from a distance. Mr. Heimlich was a graduate and former faculty member of Purdue. The Reynolds public and Lutheran school were closed for the funeral and several business houses were also closed.
